All the application icons from the Launcher have disappeared, although it appears that the rest of the menu items in other sections are functioning properly.
is there a way to run some terminal command to recreate the default application icons in the Launcher?

After I rebooted, the Launcher icons re-appeared. So this is no longer a problem.
After years of desktop support, however, encountering situations I knew would NOT be solved by just rebooting, I am pleasantly surprised to find that this particular situation has that simple cure.
It does leave unanswered, however, the question of why the icons disappeared to begin with.
But, for now, case closed.
