broadcom BCM43602 not working on macbook

I have put manjaro on my work Macbook Pro a1707 and can not get the wifi to work.

The brcmfmac driver included with gets as far as finding networks - but can not connect to any. For wpa it asks again for password with no effect and for unsecured networks it just gives up.

does nothing to change the state.

I have also tried installing both the broadcom-wl-dkms and linux51-broadcom-wl drivers. When I modprobe this, I get:

And nothing shows in networkmanager. KInfocenter says that bnep0 is in state "up" - not sure where it sources that info from.

(I make sure to run rmmod b43 b43legacy ssb bcm43xx brcm80211 brcmfmac brcmsmac bcma wlbefore modprobing and always stop and start networkmanager with systemctl after this before testing - I have also tried all three drivers with rebooting).

So it seems I either need to
A/ get the brcmfmac driver to state 'up' (? - I assume this is related to its refusal to connect to the networks it finds)
B/ somehow get the system to recognize the broadcom-wl driver after it has loaded.
