Bumblebee does not work as daemon ; "Could not enable discrete graphics card"

I have updated my system several days ago, then bumblebee does not work...
Does anyone have any idea to fix this issue?

  1. Driver & hardware are as follows.

PC: Thinkpad T460s

Driver :
mhwd -li
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-390xx-bumblebee 2018.05.04 false PCI

inxi -G

Graphics: Card-1: Intel HD Graphics 520 driver: i915 v: kernel
           Card-2: NVIDIA GM108M [GeForce 930M] driver: N/A
Display: server: X.Org 1.18.4 driver: intel unloaded: nvidia resolution: 2560x1418~1Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: N/A v: N/A
  1. After starting up PC, bumblebee status is as follows.

sudo systemctl status bumblebeed

bumblebeed.service - Bumblebee C Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/bumblebeed.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: active (running) since Sun 2018-06-10 21:45:29 JST; 2min 1s ago
 Main PID: 600 (bumblebeed)
    Tasks: 1 (limit: 4915)
   Memory: 35.2M
   CGroup: /system.slice/bumblebeed.service
           โ””โ”€600 /usr/bin/bumblebeed --use-syslog

 6ๆœˆ 10 21:47:11 T460s bumblebeed[600]: Could not enable discrete graphics card
 6ๆœˆ 10 21:47:13 T460s bumblebeed[600]: Could not enable discrete graphics card
  1. I find the following solution and modify line 196 and 205 of /etc/default/tlp,

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218757
https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/bumblebee-could-not-enable-discrete-graphics-card/16728/12

check addesss

lspci | grep "NVIDIA" | cut -b -8
06:00.0

modify /etc/default/tlp

# Exclude PCI(e) device adresses the following list from Runtime PM
# (separate with spaces). Use lspci to get the adresses (1st column).
RUNTIME_PM_BLACKLIST="06:00.0"

# Exclude PCI(e) devices assigned to the listed drivers from Runtime PM
# (should prevent accidential power on of hybrid graphics' discrete part).
# Default is "radeon nouveau"; use "" to disable the feature completely.
# Separate multiple drivers with spaces.
RUNTIME_PM_DRIVER_BLACKLIST="nouveau nvidia"

Then restart PC, and I still have same error of bumblebee.

  1. But I stop bumblebeed.service.

sudo systemctl disable bumblebeed

Then reboot PC and start bumblebee as manually.

sudo systemctl start bumblebeed

It seems to work.
I can use mpv and tensroflow with GPU.

sudo systemctl status bumblebeed

can you return

inxi -Fxxxz
cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch

have you installed
linuxyyzz-acpi_call (Y/N)
linuxyyzz-bbswitch (Y/N)

AFAIK until now mhwd does not handle/edit tlp settings for any driver config.
IDK if this might be requested, if it's more than one report about it.
Only the devs @philm can tell.

As for most logs, they are not errors, just warnings, except one, maybe indicating some issue to be taken care of. Or not.

I am sorry, I can not understand what you mean, because of my English ability.

As for most logs, they are not errors, just warnings, except one, maybe indicating some issue to be taken care of. Or not.

Anyway, bumblebee doe not work on my PC now.

Something is wrong here, since bbswitch is installed.

optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8  <=== Does it load?
journalctl -u bumblebeed -p 4

Post those, please, using pre-formated text button in post edit mode.
If one is too long, use some pastebin service.

Xorg.8.log shows that I have "X.Org X Server 1.19.6" , but "inxi -G" shows different version.
Why ? and what should I do ?

There have been other users with bumblebee problem, so it maybe a package update the problem. Check which packages you upgraded last time. Maybe reinstall bbswitch and install linux417-acpi_call.
Check bbswitch settings

cat /etc/modprobe.d/bbswitch.conf

Also, as a precaution edit /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf

 PMMethod=bbswitch

on both instances (nvidia, nouveau sections)

Well, I can just suggest some troubleshooting, just confirm

When you start any program from command line with optirun, does it work?
Always?
When does it fail?

You said you disabled bumblebee and started manually and it works.

Now, after you have done all the above, reboot and

  • Open a terminal and start journalctl for follow-up and keep it open
journalctl -fu bumblebeed
  • In another terminal session enable bumblebeed
  • check bbswitch status
    cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
  • start a demanding program that you know in the past used bumblebee.
  • check bbswitch
    cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
  • Start a program manually with optirun
  • Inspect the terminal with the journalctl running

And keep calm!.. :expressionless:

Edit: Another check for troubleshooting:
It is reported in the past, that bumblebee behaved differently with AC power to Battery Power (TLP). So could you check the behavior (un)plugging AC power.

Almost fine now but I still some issue.

There is not bbswitch in the directory /proc/acpi/

cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
cat: /proc/acpi/bbswitch: there is no such a file

ls /proc/acpi/
button/ ibm/ wakeup

This just changes the order, which makes me wonder if there is another setting in this folder, too many left-over files in there. Let this run as it may show the order of parsing:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf

Check bbswitch module options at its site

Module options

The module has some options that control the behavior on loading and unloading: load_state and unload_state. Valid values are -1, 0 and 1 meaning "do not change the card state", "turn the card off" and "turn the card on" respectively. For example, if you want to have bbswitch disable the card immediately when loading the module while enabling the card on unload, load the module with:

# modprobe bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=1

The unload_state value can be changed on runtime, the above command yields the same behavior as:

# modprobe bbswitch load_state=0
# echo 1 | tee /sys/module/bbswitch/parameters/unload_state

If not explictly set, the default behavior is not to change the power state of the discrete video card which equals to load_state=-1 unload_state=-1.

The Lenovo T410 and Lenovo T410s laptops need the module option skip_optimus_dsm=1, otherwise it will detect the wrong methods which result in the card not being disabled.

Should I have remove old files or move them another directory ?

The Lenovo T410 and Lenovo T410s laptops need the module option skip_optimus_dsm=1, otherwise it will detect the wrong methods which result in the card not being disabled.

My PC is T460s and bumblebeed works now, so I think PC do not need "skip_optimus_dsm=1" setting.

Now Bumblebeed work at both battery and AC.

Almost fine now but I still have an issue.
There is not bbswitch in the directory /proc/acpi/

What should I do to fix this issue?

cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
cat: /proc/acpi/bbswitch: there is no such a file

ls /proc/acpi/
button/ ibm/ wakeup

That's great even though I really can't see what you changed that fixed it. You have scrambled your posts and I can't see the sequence. Editing old/past posts is only the worst thing to do on these complicated troubleshooting.
Can you identify which change made your system work?
And please explain what you mean that "bumblebee works", as it was working (active). Instead bbswitch was not. Have you deleted some conf files? Which?
About the "proc", I believe you should create a bbswitch file, although I am not sure. Some more reading and/or an expert may help .

Thanks for your help, Petsam.

Thatโ€™s great even though I really canโ€™t see what you changed that fixed it.

It seems that renameing of mhwd-bbswitch.conf to bbswitch.conf can work.

cd /etc/modprobe.d/
sudo cp mhwd-bbswitch.conf bbswitch.conf

I have several files in /etc/modprobe.d/ , and they may cause interference each other at starting up PC. That makes bumblebeed can not work.

Should I remove old unnecessary file ?

please explain what you mean that โ€œbumblebee worksโ€, as it was working (active). Instead bbswitch was not. Have you deleted some conf files? Which?

I mean bumblebeed can work as daemon, and I do not have to start bumblebee manually.

My answer to fix this issue are as follows.

install linux417-bbswitch linux417-acpi_call
sudo pacman -S linux417-bbswitch linux417-acpi_call

edit bumblebee.conf
sudo vi /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf
line 58, 69
PMMethod=bbswitch

rename *mhwd-bbswitch.conf* to *bbswitch.conf*
cd /etc/modprobe.d/
sudo cp mhwd-bbswitch.conf bbswitch.conf
