Cannot get remote content displayed in Thunderbird 68.1

With the latest thunderbird update I seem to have lost the ability to display any remote content in my received email for some reason. Like for example the avatars in the forum's notification emails, or notifications from facebook and the likes. They have disappeared from all of my emails.
Having the Allow remote content in messages box ticked globally doesn't change anything.
Specifically allowing email addresses and/or urls doesn't seem to help either.
I have even removed ~/.thunderbird/xyz.default/permissions.sqlite in my profile and had it recreated, but none of that seems to help.

What am I missing?

I just checked in my Thunderbird 68.1.0.

I can get external content shown just fine. :frowning:

Hello Bernhard!

Not sure if this is going to help, but can you check what option is enabled in Thunderbird for displaying the body of the messages? The option can be found in the main menu (or Menu Bar) under View > Message Body As.

If you have Simple HTML as the default option, change it to Original HTML and see if you can fetch the remote content in your messages.

It was indeed set to Simple HTML, no idea how and when that had happened...
