Can't connect to wifi from laptop

Recently my laptop has been acting strangely when it comes to wifi. Sometimes is loses connection when it starts from sleep mode and the only way to connect again is to reboot. Now it doesn't connect even with that. I can only connect to the internet by plugging my phone and using that.

Running inxi -Nn returns this:Network:

Please install kernel 4.19 and reboot into it. Select the kernel version at the grub boot screen. When you reboot if you do not see the grub boot screen press and hold down the ESC, SHIFT or F8 key. This should show the GRUB boot menu if it doesn't appear. As soon as you see the grub boot screen, press the down arrow. Select the "advanced" menu from the choices and press enter. In the next menu you can select the different kernels you have installed to boot from. Select the regular kernel you wish boot into (not the fallback), and then press enter to complete the kernel change.

Is your wifi the internal adapter that came with your laptop, or have you replaced it?

Are you dual booting Windoze?

I switched kernel. In the GRUB menu there were 2 options for 4.19 but the text was to big and the whole title wasn't showing so I picked the first option; Is it the correct one? can I adjust the text so everything is visible?

I am not dual-booting neither have I replaced my wi-fi card, though the pc is getting very old so the possibility it's failing is not out of the question.

Do you remember the manufacturer of the wifi, or the model number by any chance?

Please post:

lspci -knnvvv | grep -i net

Yes, the first choice is the correct one. You can also try the second one. That is the fallback kernel.

the card is an Atheros AR5B195

the command returns:

lspci: Unable to load libkmod resources: error -12
09:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Qualcomm Atheros AR8152 v2.0 Fast Ethernet [1969:2062] (rev c1)
Subsystem: Toshiba Corporation AR8152 v2.0 Fast Ethernet [1179:fc50]

Try disabling/masking tlp;

It is possible a tlp misconfiguration is creating this problem.

Test to see if tlp is causing this by disabling tlp temporarily.

To prevent tlp from starting it can be masked:

sudo systemctl mask tlp && sudo systemctl mask tlp-sleep.service

Reboot, then test if the problem persists.

If no improvement then you should enable tlp again.

To enable tlp, run the following commands:

sudo systemctl unmask tlp && sudo systemctl unmask tlp-sleep.service

Then restart.

This is not good news that your wifi is not showing up in any of your outputs. It is possible that your wifi has hardware issues or it is possible that your bios could be responsible.

Is your wifi enabled in the bios?

Is your bios the most recent version?

A possible fix may be to power down your laptop completely, Remove all power sources (battery pack & power plug) let sit for several minutes. Then restart the computer, enter the bios and reset the bios to the factory defaults.

If that doesn't work, then powering down again and physically removing the wifi card may be the last hope. Boot into manjaro, then fully power down again. Remove all power sources, then reinsert the wifi card into the mobo. Then power up and see if the card is detected. If not it is possible the card is dead.

The other possibility is a hardware switch is shutting down your adapter (but it should still show up in the prior outputs).

Please post:

rfkill list

There is one other possibility.

A recent upgrade to the linux-firmware may have been responsible for your breakage.

Downgrade to an earlier linux-firmware version using the pacman package cache:

If your system has been installed for some time and you have not cleaned the pacman cache then you can install older packages directly from your cache.

The pacman cache is located in the following directory:

/var/cache/pacman/pkg/

You can use the "pacman -U" command to install packages directly from your cache.

Example:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-firmware-20200224.r1582.efcfa03-1-any.pkg.tar.zst

Simply substitute any older linux-firmware version in your cache into the above command example to install older alternate firmware.

To find out which older linux-firmware packages you have stored you can search your package cache,

You can search for any stored versions of the linux-firmware with the following command:

grep -r linux-firmware-* /var/cache/pacman/pkg

You can sequentially test all older versions of the linux-firmware until you hopefully find one that works.

Be sure to reboot after installing any alternate linux-firmware package version.

Once the package is reverted, (if you wish to do so) you can temporarily freeze the version to prevent it being inadvertently updated.

If you wish to hold at an older package version you will need to ensure pacman ignores updating that package in the future.

Downgrading and freezing a package version should only be used by advanced users who know the risks involved.

Freezing (ignoring) a package is very poor long term solution on a rolling distribution.

Freezing packages for long periods is inadvisable as it can lead to instability (and eventually a broken system).

If you choose to prevent pacman from updating a package you can do so by editing /etc/pacman.conf.

You can temporarily prevent pacman from auto-updating a package by adding it in the "IgnorePkg" section in your pacman.conf file.

Example:

Default pacman.conf configuration:

# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
#IgnorePkg =

Edit the "IgnorePkg" section, as in the further example below:

# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg = linux-firmware

Save the changes to /etc/pacman.conf .

Further information on downgrading:

Warning:

The downgrading of packages is not recommended, as partial upgrade states are unsupported. Downgrading is only intended for advanced users who understand the potential consequences.

Information on downgrading packages on Manjaro:

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Downgrading_packages

Warning:

Some Arch downgrade procedures are not intended to be used with Manjaro as some packages differ.

I downgrated to:

Binary file /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-firmware-20200114.9c340bd-1-any.pkg.tar.zst

but the problem remains. I also reset the bios after powering down for a few minutes and disabling the tlp didn't help.

rfkill list

doesn't return anything.
Do you think a fresh re-install might fix it?

Try a live boot disk first. See if everything is working. No point if it's not.

Ok downloading the iso. I read on another thread that someone fixed his wifi issue by connecting to a network while on live mode and then going back to the normal version. I will inform you if it fixes things.
Again, thanks for the effort

Before you give up on your install, try kernel 4.9, 4.14, and the real time 4.19 kernels.

Are you sure of your wifi model as this is not what I am finding in online searches.

Please post:

lsmod | sort

The ethernet part is actually working, it was probably a bad cable because i changed it and it is working now.

as for the wifi, the model number I gave you was the one that is written on the card. I oppened the case to see.

lsmod returns:

Seems like it was a hardware issue, I managed to find another card and it works fine.

Did you replace the internal adapter with another internal card or did you simply add a USB wifi dongle.

If you actually replaced the internal adapter please list the replacement model for others benefit that might have a similar laptop.

Just in case you want to try one last effort to see if your old internal adapter could be revived try this(now that I know your wmi modules):

Be sure you have no open programs running then execute this command:

sudo rmmod toshiba_acpi; sudo rmmod wmi_bmof; sudo rmmod wmi; sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

Glad you found something that worked.

I switched the internal adapter for an Atheros AR5B93, which I think is overall better than the original.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L750-1GN

Also switching kernels may have had a hand in fixing the issue because when I changed back to 5.4.24-1 the problem reappeared just one time. After restarting once it seems to be fixed.
