Check out Microsoft’s new package manager!

Microsoft is developing an open source package manager for Windows 10. I suspect it’s to try to draw devs back to Windows with better (Linux-like) integration. I have to admit this was quite unexpected and clever on their part.

It would be pretty sweet if it allows for the installation of apps without needing an account on the Windows store.

It would. Though I suspect they could still track who has installed what through the Windows product keys and IP addresses. Not much anyone can do about that. That being said this is a curious move. If they really want to make me happy, ditch NTFS for BTRFS or ext4. No more freezes and defragging.

They are getting desperate. Good.

I would probably only use it in a corporate environment so that level of tracking isn't overly concerning(to me).

At work, the store is blocked so getting something out of it can be painful. Even worse if it needs to be automated.

Heh. And when you fail to pay your upcoming monthly Windows 'dues', nothing that you installed will work.

My vote is for them to switch to BTRFS and make it easy once again to setup an offline account instead of hiding the option.

Eventually they will open source Windows.

It would be interesting if they did but it would be profit suicide. Office subscriptions and Xbox sales aren’t going to carry M$ alone. Technically react OS is an open source needs help.

And it will be based on Linux.

Humor aside, I wonder if Microsoft does have future plans for a custom Linux kernel for Windows. Between Azure and the recent friendliness towards Linux I can’t help but wonder.

They are just waiting for that magic day a Linux distro really starts taking over, then they will do it.

Meanwhile it's more profitable for them to stay as they already are, and that's a conscious choice.

AhHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa sorry dude but April Fools day was 2 and a half months ago.

eh. They might as a 'tip of the hat' ... but roughly 10 years after they abandoned the code base
(remember one of the E's is 'embrace' .. and that also includes public perception)

Heard about Microsoft 'stealing' AppGet yet?

No MicroDICK fan here but to be blunt they should of gone after PatchMyPC, cauae it's much better.

You seem to know a lot about Windoze?

How sad.

How sad that you don't realize WELL over half here have been using Manjaro or other distros for less than 3 years and spent YEARS using windows. As for knowing a lot about Windows it's actually a DAMN good thing, cause I'm able to help a lot of people fix issues that crop up.

Isn't that how open source software is supposed to work? You can fork it and create your own version.

No. Nope. Na-uh.
