Dell XPS 15 9570(?) help

Hello,

Long time listener, first time caller... So, I am trying to make Manjaro work with my Dell XPS computer that I just purchased. The full specs can be seen here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/new-xps-15/spd/xps-15-9570-laptop/cax15w10p1c1654p and I am having the toughest time getting this operating system working. I've tried everything it seems. Here's the list of things I have tried:

  • Tried to install Manjaro straight up booting into live with the nonfree drivers -- Black screen every time I try to login
  • Tried to install Manjaro with Manjaro Architect with the nonfree drivers -- Again, black screen every time I try to login

Honestly I have installed and tried to login a solid 50 times so far with countless configurations.

I have tried adding countless kernel parameters like acpi_rev_override=1 (which worked on my last Dell XPS to get things booted) and even the acpi_osi stuff. Nothing seems to work here. I just get a black screen every time I try to login.

After some investigating I have found that mhwd just simply freezes when booting into the command line from grub and trying to run it. This could be the issue but I am unsure how to resolve this. The most confusing part is that the live environment from USB works completely fine... Why wouldn't the install work??

Any guidance to help in the installation process would be amazing as I would love to use Manjaro on my new laptop. The kernel is 4.14 on all of these installations.

I am actually using the 17.1.11 Gnome image that is found on the website.

Well, I got it on Friday so I assume it is the most up to date BIOS. Is there a way I can view this somewhere?

Oh, actually by booting into the BIOS, it says the Bios Version = 1.1.4 ... So I see I am behind a bit since the new Bios on there is 1.2.2... Seems like I should update it?

Actually, the image I was using was 17.1.10... I just made a 17.1.11 USB and I am going to try that out with the updated BIOS and see if I have even luck. I will report back with my findings.

So, trying to install Manjaro with the installer with the nonfree drivers and rebooting without kernel parameters and with acpi_rev_override=1 was unsuccessful.

I actually was using the SUSE Studio Image maker on another Manjaro Install I have. Is this not sufficient?

The live USB works fine, it's just when the installation is done and I reboot and try to get in when everything goes to crap.

is it possible that we boot from the stick you open the console / terminal and following
execute commandos and post here

lspci -nn
lspci -knn

everything is on the USB stick so you can log in here as well.
We could learn more with the hardware information

Alright, I attempted all of the install options after making the USB with Etcher and updating the BIOS. Still no luck, just black screens every time I try and login.

What happens if you log into the shell instead of gnome (press CTRL-ALT-F2)?

If that login works OK, perhaps try updating the system?

sudo pacman -Syyu

If it's able to update, try rebooting and logging into gnome.

Do you mean " a black screen with a blinking cursor at top left corner"?
If yes, it is Xorg failure or GDM failure. Try to go to TTY

login and run startx.
If it works to Gnome, then it's GDM. Else, post any errors and

cat ~/.local/share/Xorg.0.log
mhwd -li
inxi -SMGxxz

and of course update

I just noticed your current driver is nouveau (free), instead of non-free as you claim.
So you might re-install your driver with mhwd.
It would help all of us if you have read/searched for similar topics and tutorials in this forum (not that external are bogus, but so you do the sensible thing).

petsam is right, you have nouveau installed, which causes the black screen.

You can try adding nouveau.modeset=0 after acpi_rev_override=1 in the kernel parameters.

I have searched for similar topics and I have tried literally everything I have found. If I said free I must've mistyped. I meant nonfree.

Also, I can't login at all... Do you mean booting into command line?

You didn't describe what you already tried (only 2 grub params), so we don't suggest the same.
For example, you should confirm/blacklist nouveau, which is normaly done by mhwd.
