Somebody else just tested this, and it works from Arch Linux.

Manjaro and Arch don't share repos. The Manjaro community repo inherits many packages from the Arch community repo but it is not the same.

element-desktop is a new package that is currently in the testing branch on Manjaro. It will likely come to Manjaro in the next stable update.

How do I install it from the Manjaro testing repo then?

Switch to the testing branch if you don't want to wait for the next stable update.

So I cannot install one or two packages from testing without switching my entire distro to use the testing branch? Gentoo allows me to do that.

Nothing like this for Manjaro?

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:X86/Portage/Branches#Mixing_stable_with_testing

Normally that's not a good idea as packages rely on the version of dependencies they were built with. Without also installing the updated dependencies, things could break.

However, in this case it may be fine as Element is just an Electron app.

Nope.

It doesn't break anything in Gentoo though unless there's a bug in the testing package.

So how do I install just that package and its dependencies from the testing branch without switching my entire system over?

So how do you do it?

you can do it like this:

sudo pacman -U http://mirror.easyname.at/manjaro/pool/sync/element-web-1.7.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
sudo pacman -U http://mirror.easyname.at/manjaro/pool/sync/element-desktop-1.7.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
