External monitor not available in "Display Configuration"

I'm trying to configure Manjaro on my new laptop and I have issues with the external monitor. The symptom is that it is not detected by xrandr and on the Display Configuration widget. So in the end it remains blank the whole time.

The curious thing is that X knows about the external monitor, because I can see this in /var/log/Xorg.0.log right after I plug it in

Hi! looks like you need to use some manager to can use you nvidia card, the hdmi output is wired to nvidia, make a search in the forum about intel/nvidia there some options you can use

Thank you for your reply. Do you mean something like optimus-manager to switch between nvidia and intel graphic card? In that case, should I then use only the nvidia mode? Or can I use also hybrid or intel?

Just for the sake of learning something, how do you infer that the HDMI port of my laptop is wired to the nvidia card?

I tried with optimus-manager but I didn't get much...

I followed the guide here Guide: Install and configure optimus-manager for hybrid GPU setups (Intel/NVIDIA).

Remaining on intel mode, I still can't see the external monitor. Nvidia mode does not work, if I switch to it I see only the mouse cursor (on both monitors) but nothing else and the keyboard is unresponsive. This is the log in /var/log/optimus-manager/switch

You can try with nvidia prime

Frankly, when analyzing logs, I need to have exact time stamps that must match. So for example, I watch optimus-manager log (which in 99% cases is correct) to see when there were switch attemps.

Then I check DM logs with the same time to discover parts that may tell more about the issue. Sometimes Xorg log must be additionally analyzed.

The logs above are not helpful, because as usual, optimus-manager shows all OK, so the show stopper happened afterwards, possibly on DM route. Also, there are no time stamps so I can't see what happened during the actual switch.

If I understood the topic completely, you want your external monitor to work. In the case of working optimus-manager, you need to have either Intel Modesetting or Nvidia mode to make it work. In Intel Intel mode or hybrid mode it simply won't work by design. Incoming Nvidia 450xx drivers will make external monitors work in hybrid mode, but the current 440xx drivers can't do that.

As to the switch itself, many people fail to modify SDDM config, then the switch fails.

A friend of mine uses bumblebee driver and only has to run intel-virtual-output for the external monitor to appear as a virtual output. From there he can activate it with xrandr or using a gui tool. See more here.

For PRIME, in your case, read here.

thanks mbb, I tried with Reverse PRIME, but when I run xrandr --setprovideroutputsource NVIDIA-G0 modesetting I get back

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)

Minor opcode of failed request: 35 (RRSetProviderOutputSource)
  Value in failed request: 0x256
Serial number of failed request: 16

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I'm getting back late, but I was on vacation.

I can provide some more logs
