HDMI sound issue (Dell G3, Cannon Lake)

Dear all,
I used manjaro XFCE already, but now, for my new laptop, I tried Gnome edition. Everything is working, except sound when I connected my laptop with Smart TV using the HDMI connector. I got a picture but no sound. This issue doesn't exist on Solus 4.1, I immediately got sound and HDMI display port in sound output section. In Manjaro I have the only speaker built-in audio. Please help.

I have same model laptop. I solved the issue a few days ago. I use optimus manager. I installed video-nvidia-440xx. Then I updated my kernel version to 5.7. After installations reboot and you can see hdmi plugged at pavucontrol and select it. Solved my mic. problem with installing Kernel 5.7.

UPDATE: I made a switch to 5.7 kernel, and now when I connected hdmi cable there is some "jack retasking for hda intel sound cards" window. Then I saw that my sound card do not exist anymore- there is only dummy output...

or has dmic detection been disabled as suggested by Archwiki ?

@nikgnomic When I was using kernel 5.4, I used dmic command but after installing kernel 5.7, I removed the setting and no problem anymore. Also, I installed sof-firmware before and didn't remove it.

but everything is in status (unplugged) (unavailable) except analog stereo audio. So I can choose hdmi-stereo, but there is no sound either.

Kernel 5.7 only dummy audio is loaded- no sound card.

You can try to install 'sof-firmware' with 'sudo pacman -S sof-firmware'. Then, reboot your system and start with kernel 5.7.

UPDATE: my laptop mic is working here in 5.7 :grinning: Only HDMI sound fix is still pending. The last step before my pure happiness :slight_smile:

You should select HDMI at the pavucontrol. Then your sound comes from your TV :slight_smile: I know that because I have watched movie on TV using my laptop :smiley:

please check the output of 'systemctl | grep sys-devices'. there should be something similar like this one:

this is the nvidia hdmi sound controller. i'm sure it is missing at your system because you are using the free nouveau driver. this supports the graphic but not the audio of nvidia. install the original non free driver from nvidia and it will work.

You are using free driver. Can you try video-nvidia-440xx non-free.

I used this manual [HowTo] Set up PRIME (output offload) with NVIDIA proprietary driver in order to set up my vga card and got max fps playing my only game (dota 2) so I am a little bit scared if now I need to change this :slight_smile: but if you have the same laptop and everything is working I do not see the problem here. I will remove first my current driver and cuda then I will intall video-nvidia-440xx. Lets roll :smiley:

In order to, first remove my current driver I followed up this solution post: removing nvidia-340xx-utils breaks dependency 'nvidia-utils then I installed:

video-nvidia-440xx

but got a black screen :frowning:

So using terminal I remove the above driver and installed the same one:

So now I am able to use my manjaro but unfortunately, I didn't change anything.

but I still have only cannon Lake sound card:

which means no sound over hdmi .

Did you install(installing optimus manager)

video-nvidia-440xx

or

video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-440xx-prime

(It should be video-nvidia-440xx and there should be no black screen if you install true.)
