Intermittant WIFI problems

Also try this:

Disabling MAC address randomization may sometimes be required to obtain a consistent connection. MAC address randomization is enabled by default in Network Manager. It may be disabled by adding the following lines to /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

Save the changes and reboot your router and computer.

Thanks tbg, I will follow those instructions in a while, but first... It is only 'sometimes' the wifi doesn't work after resuming from suspend, quite often it does without a problem.

Now in the last half hour, I disconnected from the VPN (using nordnm from AUR ), I put laptop down, with lid open... (I have screen to blank after 10 mins.) then when I picked it back up, moved touchpad to wake screen, there was no internet (though again, network manager icon was showing connected). I just need to disconnect and reconnect and all is well again.!!??
Here is journal for that time period..

So it happens sometimes when not connected to VPN, sometimes when connected (though that could be a NordVPN issue), and totally randomly.

Just need to pop out for an hour, I will follow the instruction and post back later.

Disabled MAC randomization, rebooted pc and router, and went out....
Just back in laptop still open from reboot, opened Firefox and no internet...
Here is full journalctl -b (in 2 posts)

I'm going to try running a live usb of Mint 19 XFCE for a few hours, to see if I can replicate these issues. I will try without any VPN for an hour or so, then add my VPN, but using OpenVPN and Network Manager, rather than nordnm app.
Will report back any findings later.

Why do you not unload the drivers before suspending as I suggested.

I have tried that and that works fine, but if you look back at my posts, the wifi is cutting out even if I leave my laptop with the lid open for half an hour or so (screen blanks after 10 mins, but not suspends, that is only when I close lid...), and it doesn't always happen when I come out of suspend either.
very strange behaviour, I suspect is going to make it difficult to solve.
Could you prepare a script for me, so I could just execute it every time I need to restart Network manager please ?

Edit.. This seems to work.

#!/bin/bash
sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager
sudo systemctl start NetworkManager

I can make an alias and run it when needed, seems to refresh the connection. but only a workaround, I would like to know why this is happening.

You don't expect much do you. I see you edited out the part where you wanted me to script everything for you.

I will give you a link to a post where I have instructions on how to script this. Simply substitute the commands I gave you in the script.

https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/surface-pro-1796-wifi-not-resuming-after-suspend/48133/47

You have been less than cooperative with me so far. I went to the trouble of posting 8 commands to resolve your issue and you didn't even have the courtesy to tell me you had run them and that they had worked.

If you had described your issues in greater detail I could have given you further options to correct your connectivity issues. You my friend need to be more proactive if you expect help. I have posted the information numerous times on the forum that you need to correct this.

BTW if you'd also mentioned sooner this was a VPN related problem I would have given you pertinent info regarding recent issues in that regard. But as you've left me guessing through this entire thread I will return the favour.

Get to searching, because you've got a lot of learning to do if you want to correct this on your own. I don't have the patience to help someone who makes things as painfully difficult as you.

See ya.

"Thanks tbg, I will follow those instructions in a while, but first… It is only ‘sometimes’ the wifi doesn’t work after resuming from suspend, quite often it does without a problem."

"Just need to pop out for an hour, I will follow the instruction and post back later."

"Disabled MAC randomization, rebooted pc and router, and went out…
Just back in laptop still open from reboot, opened Firefox and no internet…"

Sorry, but I'm not sure what I did wrong, you are trying to give me a solution to the wifi not working after suspend, when in fact if you read my posts properly, you would have understood that the main issue i am having, is random wifi interruption all day when I am leaving the laptop lid open.

Thanks for you suggestions, I have made a simple script to workaround this problem, but I would really like to know why it is happening.

I don't know what info you think you posted, but you posted nothing of the sort. I will re-post it so you don't edit it as you did earlier, to make my posts seem like I'm over reacting.

Very little info there my friend. I am not a mind reader.

You minimized and ignored the suggestions bogdancovaciu gave you. He is one of the most experienced troubleshooters on this forum, and you basically blew him off. I don't think you're making a good impression so far with the people attempting to help you.

Hope you get it figured, good luck.

Sorry but I don't edit posts except to correct spelling mistakes. If you look again, my plea for help with a script is still there, nothing edited out. Get your facts right...... I agree, my 1st post could have contained a little more info, but did you actually read anything else I posted after that ?

In subsequent posts, I go on to explain the issue in more detail and provide as much information as i could, with my little experience of Linux.

Dunno what you mean by minimizing and ignoring bogdancovaciu's suggestion, I actually implemented it, and it hasn't helped.

"I understand dhcpcd now, so I guess commenting out that line is worth a try, as it is easily restored.
Will see if it make any difference, as nothing else I have done so far has worked, it’s worth a try. Will keep thread informed."

It seems you only read the first post or two, and ignore everything else... I hope I get it figured out too, but that is looking very unlikely, unfortunately.

Perhaps you should "Get your facts right…" I guess you never knew the forum saves your history of past edits. Funny how the quote below disappeared from your post in a "spelling edit".

Lee ... i would start by disabling IPV6 on both of your cards (Lan and WiFi). If you want that the IPV4 to be manual, is fine, but now is also important what connection has priority if both are set to autoconnect (0 si the default, a greater number in Priority field makes that connection to gain ... priority ... over the other one).

The journalctl shows some failures in authentication with the router, and it seems you use WPA-PSK ... i would go with WPA2-PSK AES.

I'm sure your router can handle DHCP service and have address reservation for each device you have. Give that a try.
The suggestion from @tbg work perfectly ... Was a bit strange for me to see you being a bit argumentative with him ... also remember, the NetworkManager service has this entry:

ExecStart=/usr/bin/NetworkManager --no-daemon
Restart=on-failure

Please look at my post 13, It is still there... You obviously have an issue with me, and/or an issue with reading. Unbelievable.

I have IPV6 disabled at boot in grub. I am on a FTTH connection, and the router provided by the ISP (Ozone) prevents you from logging in to the Router's config page (192.168.8.254). They provide you with a web interface, as part of my "Espace Client" which lets you port forward, turn on and off DHCP, and change the Encryption type.
I will try to change to WPA2-PSK as you suggest, as I read wpa_supplicant can have some issues in this area.

Not sure if the network interface is still not looking for it if is enabled in the network configuration gui. One day i might check that out ...

After countless disconnects yesterday, early this morning I decided to put my IPV4 connection back onto Auto DHCP addresses, and haven't had a single disconnect in 6 hours since. Looks like that was probably the reason, but I don't understand why. I had my connection set to manual, gave it a fixed IP etc, and it seemed to work mostly fine. But it just seemed to get worse in the last day or 2 and yesterday was terrible.
Thanks for the tips, it helped me to focus my reading on some of these subjects, which I knew little about.
PS, Love the Frank Zappa drawing... Imho he was the greatest guitarist ever.

(Scrap that, it went back to rats ass a few hours later)

Just wanted to keep this thread updated, maybe it will assist someone/me... ! After wiping Manjaro and going back to Opensuse Leap 15, both NetworkManager and Wicked exhibited the same behaviour.

Live USB's of Mint and LXLE also had same issue. So it must be a hardware/firmware issue, as no other devices in the house (Linux with different wifi chip, Windows or Android) have the issue.

Finally after further reading, it appears that the 5GHz Band has the issue, and the 2.4GHz doesn't, as I have had stable wifi on 2.4 for a couple of days now, back on Manjaro XFCE... so I'm guessing it is an Ath10k Firmware update that has caused the problem, seeing that I had ran Manjaro KDE for over a year without issue on 5GHz until around the Spring of this year.

I'm sure there will be a solution to this, but my lack of time/brains is unable to find it.. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Thank you for the update.
