issue with installing nvidia driver

log into tty and check status of gdm
systemctl status gdm

Go to tty and check:

journalctl -b -p3

It may be some small, simple thing to fix.

optimus-manager --set-startup hybrid
and reboot. or "intel", or "nvidia". the only output from gdm is from optimus-manager, i dont see why it didnt start.

what do you mean by this? the login screen does not come up? or it does but the desktop wont load? black screen?

pls explain

This may be because of the line "gdm-password: unable to loacte daemon control file" I'm not well oriented with it so I don't have any solution at hand. It's also closing to midnight so I'm preparing to sleep, so it's too late today to focus on it.

If you solve this, another obstacle may be nouveau. There is some complaint because of it. Try then changing switching to bbswitch.

The log in screen doesn’t come up, it shows ACER

I can now boot

it is quite late here as well, maybe i should retry https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/guide-install-and-configure-optimus-manager-for-hybrid-gpu-setups-intel-nvidia/92196 tommorow and see if there's something different

does prime-run glxinfo | grep -i vendor show?

Check:

optimus-manager --print-mode

If it comes up with: Current GPU mode : hybrid

then check if Nvidia is starting properly. I assume you have steam installed, so try to start it with the above command in terminal, then go to the system information and see which GPU drivers are shown there:

STEAM_RUNTIME_HEAVY=1 __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia steam

or simpler, do what @dglt showed above  . Test with steam is an ultimate check :stuck_out_tongue: .

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

it did, where do i find system information?

this is inxi -Gxxz

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI
driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b
Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: nvidia v: 440.59

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2)
  v: 4.6 Mesa 19.3.3 compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes

i tried to switch to nvidia again and it didn't boot again so i used optimus-manager --set-startup hybrid

I already gave you the command above, so I repeat:

optimus-manager --print-mode

However, from the glxinfo output it looks like hybrid mode is working fine, nvidia is loading, so we are a halfway trough. Usually intel loads without problems and Nvidia stubbornly won't. In this case you already have intel working and nvidia loading in Hybrid mode, so it's a matter of fixing it so it would work with pure Intel and Nvidia mode (which you can also try).

sorry about that

i see, thank you!

dont be sorry, just post the output

optimus-manager --print-mode
Current GPU mode : hybrid

optimus-manager --print-mode

what happens if you set nvidia as the startup mode instead of hybrid? does the desktop load?

optimus-manager --set-startup nvidia

and reboot, if it fails you can get to a TTY and set it back to hybrid.

it works

so the modes do work if they are set that way at boot but switching modes without rebooting doesnt. i do it this way intentionally because switching without rebooting is too unreliable. you got further than i did with optimus-manager, i ended up with intel mode only and part of the reason i made optimus-switch because i want to know how things work and not just

some unknown magical pixy dust i see no reason to have in the first place. anyway, at least you have it working with a reboot by setting the startup mode before rebooting.

i might be overreaching here, but i tried to change color saturation because it looks all washed out using

xrandr --output LVDS --gamma 1:0.8:0.7

and i got these messages

warning: output LVDS not found; ignoring
xrandr: Need crtc to set gamma on.

check what your output is labeled as, xrandr --prop will show you. depending on which mode your in the outputs name will vary.

mine for example using nvidia mode is eDP-1-1 but its eDP-1 on intel mode. xrandr needs the correct name

Removed

im not sure you'll be able to use that command on a laptop screen but it would look like this

xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --gamma 1:0.8:0.7
