I can increase / decrease the brightness and volume through the keyboard shortcuts, but the icone / widget is not displayed on the screen.
Ah, ok ... not that bad as i thought. Please check if somehow you unchecked the Visual feedback for status changes under Desktop Behavior > Workspace Behavior.
