KDE Plasma freeze when I use Screen Edges (KWin hang regression)

Hello guys,

So, I am experiencing Plasma freeze (sometimes cursor freezes, sometimes don't) when I put some window on a Screen Edge (left, right or top one) to resize it. That happens it's been a while. I don't know when this started to happen. I already tried remove PRIME and install Optimus Manager, but that doesn't solved the problem.

The system unfreezes after some time.

Some useful outputs:

Hello,

Your Laptop has a new BIOS update, might want to start there.
I see you have a SWAP partition on the SSD. In many instances is better to use a swapfile, have a look at that. Also check entropy and maybe enable haveged.
Is this freeze present in LTS kernels too?

Even tho this link is from a desktop related post, the logic somehow applies. See also the schedulers part:

I would suggest clearing cache for plasma elements and try the Archwiki-plasma suggestions for that.

1 - I have updated the BIOS;
2 - I deleted the SWAP partition and add the ZRAM using this;
3 - My entropy ($ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail) is 3946. Do I still need to enable haveged?
4 - Yes, the freeze is present in LTS kernel (4.19.45-1-MANJARO, at least);
5 - I have add this schedulers to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-schedulers.rules, but nothing happened.

I tried this but without success.

I suggest yes. It's a frequently reported issue, so it doesn't hurt to be on the safe side.

Make some free space (again, to be sure).
Have you deleted the cache folder?

For freezes, there should be some evidence in the logs

journalctl -p3 --no-pager --no-hostname
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
1 Like

ok. Let's go... I have reinstalled the system with free drivers and haven't noticed freezing any more.. However, after install PRIME the freezing has begin again. Now my root partition is bigger (Partition: ID-1: / size: 40.00 GiB used: 11.51 GiB (28.8%) fs: f2fs dev: /dev/sda6).

Yes, I have deleted the cache folder before reinstall the system and I got no solution. Here are the commands outputs:

journalctl -p3 --no-pager --no-hostname;

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

So, it is obviously some mistake on the way you applied PRIME.
Don't you agree?
Maybe @dglt can guess better what is wrong and @bogdancovaciu can "translate" journal errors on plasma and sddm.
You need to review again the tutorial and how you implemented it.
Check your conf files

you shouldnt need this, and hurts performance. though it's also not your freezing problem, just thought i would mention it.

i see your using the 5.1 kernel, and you mentioned trying 4.19 with same result?
5.1 for me either wont boot to a graphical desktop and/or locks up. have you tried 5.0 ?

your logs have a lot of nouveau errors, nouveau is supposed to be blacklisted during a prime setup.

did you run the cleanup script before uninstalling optimus-manager? (this is important)

did you install any video drivers from anywhere other than mhwd ?

also, have you tried using alternative composting options?

I remove it.

I tried with 4.19.x-LTS, 5.0.x and 5.1.x. Same results.

Yes, I did.

No, I never do that.

I already tried OpeGL 2.0 and 3.0. No result.

As I said above, I reinstalled the system and after install PRIME, the freeze begin again. Doesn't happen with free drivers.

Obs.: nouveau is already blacklisted.

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
blacklist nouveau
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivafb

made a mistake on that command, i mistakenly added | to the end. post output of this:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf
copy/paste

#i915.conf

options i915 edp_vswing=2

options i915 enable_psr=0
