KDE setting primary login monitor?

I have 2 monitors, one that's 2K and one 1080p to the right. Whenever I login after turning the computer on, the 1080p monitor is treated as the primary one on the login screen, and as a result the plasmoids I've set up on my 2K primary monitor get pushed over to the left upon login. Like so:

How can I fix this?
I have dug around in system settings and searched the forums to no avail. Perhaps my searching skills aren't up to snuff.

Of course, replace the 2560x1440_60 with the correct resolution and refresh rate your monitor is capable, if 60 is too low.
I added the Option "ConnectToAcpid" "Off" because on a desktop pc there is no need that the Nvidia X connects to it to test for AC/Battery power, docking events ...
In the same place, just above, you can add Option "TripleBuffer" "On" that will be somehow helpful with KWin, but the you have to make use of (create the file if doesn't exist) /etc/profile.d/kwin.sh with this content in it:

export KWIN_TRIPLE_BUFFER=1
export __GL_MaxFramesAllowed=1

Also added the last 3 sections that people always miss to add when they manually edit the config.
Reboot after making this modifications and set the KDE Display and Monitor to match. After that there will be no more issues as you described.

Thanks very much, I'll try this when I get home.

That did not work for me. The smaller monitor is still being treated as the primary one only on the login screen. Just to confirm, I should be editing /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf, correct?

Could you describe how do you want it to behave?
Which one should be Primary and why?
Have you tried the "Primary" settings either at Plasma monitors or Nvidia?

In general, setting a Primary monitor on Xorg conf and using a xrandr command in SDDM Xsetup script should do whatever you want.
Then, there is the local setting, inside your session, which could/would change system (boot) settings. These are in two places, Plasma (Displays) and Nvidia (local config autostarted).

First decide what would you like the system and your local session should do.
Also the "boot" monitor is important. Check current

grep "(boot)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log | awk '{print $5}'

Sorry if I'm not being clear enough.

The Asus (Ancor Communications) 2K monitor should be primary, because it's the larger of the 2 and what I have centered on my desktop.

I currently have the 2K monitor set as the primary monitor, and have no issues during normal use. It is set as primary in both plasma and Nvidia. Grub shows up only on the 2K monitor, as intended. However, when I turn on my PC or reboot it, the the smaller 1080p monitor is treated as the primary only on the login screen. Because of that, my plasmoid layout set up for the 2K monitor gets messed up. It's honestly confusing behavior.

$ grep "(boot)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log | awk '{print $5}'
DFP-5

meaning initially starting the system, not any suspend function. But you say

Then when does it switch? I am sorry I cannot follow the description.

Whenever the switch happens, we need the corresponding Xorg logs and maybe journal logs.

  • Have you set any Xsetup script for SDDM? Why not?

It switches after GRUB and before Plasma. I do not have an xsetup script for SDDM. Honestly didn't realize one was needed. I'm pretty new to KDE in general.

Try changing this to "DFP-1" to see any change in behavior.

Also, there is a possibility that there maybe some Plasma cache that creates this behavior.
Or an auto-started local nvidia config (have you used this?).

Do you always change Displays setting in Plasma-Monitors after login?
What does xrandr show (on Primary monitor property)?

It maybe only an Xsetup script to add to SDDM, with xrandr --auto or a more precise config.
Or use a Nvidia local config to autostart with preferred settings.

As you realize, you have to test/check which option suits to your needs.

Changing to DFP-1 didn't have the desired effect.

I do not have to change the primary monitor after logging in, my 2K monitor takes back over after entering my password.

I shall experiment with adding a script to SDDM, thank you for the advice!
