Manjaro i3 displayPort monitor not detected

I'm new to Manjaro and having trouble getting my external monitor to work. I'm using a matebook x pro with the community i3 version of Manjaro. I'm connected to a CalDigit ts3 usb-c hub and the external monitor is connected to the displayPort that's part of the hub. arandr doesn't see the monitor at all.

Have you confirmed the monitor works normally? Have you checked with DVI or HDMI?

Do you have another DisplayPort cable you can test with? (You'd be surprised how many issues are down to cheap/non-compliant cables.)

You may read Archwiki for more
You may try

intel-virtual-output
optirun intel-virtual-output
optirun xrandr # to see how bumblebee/nvidia sees

The monitor is connected to an external USB3 hub - I'm not sure optirun will work for that?

I do know that the monitor works in general, although it's actually a dvi monitor. I have it connected to a dvi to displayPort adapter cable so it could definitely be that adapter. I'll try to find another adapter I can borrow and see if that makes a difference.

intel-virtual-output
optirun intel-virtual-output
optirun xrandr # to see how bumblebee/nvidia sees

EDIT: got optirun to run now, forgot to log out my user after adding to bumblebee group.

optirun intel-virtual-output gives:

[egyb2h9@egyb2h9-pc ~]$ optirun intel-virtual-output
Unable to connect to "<unspecified>, set either the DISPLAY environment variable or pass -d <display name> on the commandline".

Have you tried without optirun? It could possibly work (normally, in some cases you may try optirun).

For the error, try one of these

intel-virtual-output -a
intel-virtual-output -d :0
intel-virtual-output -d :1

or with optirun.
Please read also intel-virtual-output --help

Have you tried without optirun? It could possibly work (normally, in some cases you may try optirun).

After I got that error I noticed that even xrandr by itself was complaining about not being able to detect a display. I rebooted and now the optirun commands seem to run fine. I ran the

intel-virtual-output
optirun intel-virtual-output
optirun xrandr # to see how bumblebee/nvidia sees

but it still only showed eDP1. I read the help and tried the two -d source display options. Running with -d :0 ran but didn't seem to change anything. Running with -d :1 returned 'unable to connect to :1'

EDIT: and for some reason I can't run intel-virtual-output with -a ... it just displays the help. Whether by itself or with the other flags it just returns the help response.

Or

intel-virtual-output -d :8

Maybe more info in

/var/log/Xorg.8.log

Now it goes more to a hardware problem, or I don't know if your bumblebee setup is verified to work.
If possible, try to test with a direct connection to some monitor, or even check for bumblebee/bbswitch errors in journal.

Have you tried the advice given at the posted link? It has some interesting options, like to export DISPLAY for usage with an external monitor.

export DISPLAY=:8
optirun <some application>

I haven't tried that latest export option you mentioned, I'll try that now. I wanted to post immediately because after looking at Xorg.8.log there does seem to be something interesting:

Edit this file and set Option AutoAddDevices to true
and maybe it is needed to also set UseEdid to true

You normally need to just re-login to check for success, but if it doesn't work, try also with a reboot.

Made these changes, my config now looks like:

But no luck. I run optiru intel-virtual0output and optirun xrandr but still get:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3000 x 2000, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected primary 3000x2000+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 290mm x 200mm
   3000x2000 60.00*+ 48.01
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I saw the 'open ACPI failed' message in Xorg.8.log and followed some instructions from [SOLVED] Bumblebee - Vulkan Issue that appear to have removed that error message. Doesn't seem to have any affect on my problem.

The card looks like working fine.
Then go back to post Nr.2 (Hardware Problem)
Come back with your parents another cable or monitor.

Hah, will do. Thanks for all your time!

Another thing, which comes to my mind:
Have you tried another thunderbolt security level in BIOS? (explanation of securtiy level see here).
I think Displayport should work in each level, but I also think its worth a shot to try if it works in none and find a solution if it solves the problem. If not change it back to the setting it was before.
Please be aware of the vulnerabilities of discarding thunderbolt security.

Thank you for the idea. I tried disabling security but still had no luck.
