Microphone disappeared from Skype

I don't use audio recording very often so this last worked about 2-3 months ago.

Where do I start investigating as the hardware seems to work but puleseaudio is not picking things up???

(data does not show much about the jack retasking but i recall this from previous discussion and don't expect that is causing a problem)

Did you try the 5.4 kernel by any chance? I've lost audio and Bluetooth and what not with some of the newer kernels occasionally. Actually just tried the 5.7 kernel yesterday Wi-Fi problems.

Every time I connect a microphone while Skype is running, the microphone isn't recognized by Skype. So for the microphone to be recognized I have to close Skype, connect the microphone, then start Skype again.
Another unrelated microphone problem I have on Manjaro is with Audacity. Every time I start Audacity after unplugging a microphone the computer become unresponsive, and the last few hundred milliseconds of sound play over and over even when the shutting down routine kicks in. In fact until the monitor won't shut down and the disk won't turn off the sound won't shut the hell up. It's like a broken gramophone. Very weird!

Skype only detects audio devices when it is started,
so a microphone must be connected and available before Skype is launched

i have also noticed that if microphone is disabled in Pulseaudio, Skype still appears to have the microphone available!

for the Audacity problem you should check the manual and Audacity forum for anything mentioning 'feedback loop'

i have heard about other users getting this sort of loop sound because of some configuration settings
but i do not know which specific settings to look at

Note: The large blue ominous sphere behind me is a desk chair I bought by recommendation of my physician because I was sitting still for too large stretches of time on a previous job and contrarily to a normal desk chair, with the sphere you naturally move around all day long without you even noticing after the first 3 days of being constantly annoyed that it moves around... :wink:

It's what I always recommend other people to do: Try another kernel! :joy: but it ended up being an audio profile setting that was set for output only and needed some @nikgnomic magic:

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo solved the issue!

credit has to go to the pacmd command for doing the majority of the work on this

only other option i can think of if it had not worked would be to blame skype, delete the configuration folder in home and hope it works when restarted

i always turn off automatic level controls because i find the effect of volume level moving up and down very distracting. if microphone is set correctly it should not need much level adjusting. but i do have some external processing and JACK DSP when needed
