Missing ZFS modules zpios splat

I'm trying to test zfs, just installed 'linux419-zfs' and 'zfs-utils' and created some test pools using .img files. Everything seems to work, except I'm missing two kernel modules for zfs: zpios and splat.

I can't find any packages that contain them using "pacman -Fs".

This means I can't rebuild my initramfs with zfs, so zfs-import-cache and zfs-mount both fail with:

The ZFS modules are not loaded
Try running '/sbin/modprobe zfs' as root to load them

I can 'modprobe zfs' after boot and import the pools individually or with the cache file, I could script it but that's just a workaround.

I've spent quite a while searching this forum and elsewhere to no avail.

What am I missing? (other than the modules)

I am using zfs and I do not have any zpios or splat module. I have the follwing services running without any issue:

Why do you believe that modules zpios and splat are missing?

If I boot with the resulting initramfs it drops out into a rather limited system, the initramfs I assume, and I have to use a live USB to fix it.

I also have those services enabled, plus zfs-share, 4 fail telling me the ZFS modules aren't loaded and to use '/sbin/modprobe zfs':

zfs-import-cache
zfs-mount
zfs-zed
zfs-share

These two load and are active:
zfs-import.target
zfs.target

This means you have the wrong module versions for the kernel you are using.

Make sure you are fully up-to-date,

sudo pacman-mirrors -f5
sudo pacman -Syyu

and try again.

It's a fresh install and up to date. I did as you said and nothing was updated.

If everything is up-to-date it means that the extramodules for 4.19 were not rebuilt for 4.19.69.

Can you try with a different kernel, e.g.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux53

?

Error message please. If it's failing at 4.19 then that's to be expected.

I need more information about what you're doing. Providing inconsistent log output with no information about the rest of the setup doesn't help.

If you installed kernel 5.3 did you also boot into kernel 5.3?

What's the output of modprobe -vvv zfs ?

OK, so the module loaded with kernel 5.3. This means the extramodule for 4.19 in the repository has the wrong ABI version for the available kernel version. That will already be resolved in the testing branch.

However, you will at least be able to test ZFS now.

The 'linux53-zfs' package got installed as a dependency along with 5.3. I should have posted the output, but I was keen to see if it worked and rebooted straight away.

Thank you very much for your help and patience, and your quick responces. However I could test it before, I've got a couple of pools with test data on, just can't auto import the pools at boot. I appolgize if I was unclear.

Manjaro is my favourite distro, and it's good to see we have such dedicated and helpful developers.

Just to be clear, if I try to rebuild the initramfs with zfs, I still get the same errors as before (missing zpios and splat). Sorry I feel like I've been useless at providing the proper info, or at least explaining it well. I'll do better in future.

OK, so looking into this more there's an issue with the zfs-utils package.

I'll update the package into unstable shortly.

Edit: zfs-utils-0.8.2-2 is now in unstable.

Sorry for taking so long, was busy yesterday. If I'm not being helpful then please feel free to ignore me. I'm not actually using ZFS yet, just getting a feel for it, and I can make a script to import if I need to.

I did a fresh install, changed to unstable and updated using:

The zfs module will automatically load when a ZFS pool device is detected; otherwise you'll need to load the module manually (e.g. if you're using file-based pool devices).

The rest is working to design - if you add a /etc/zfs/zpool.cache you'll need to systemctl enable zfs-import-cache.service too. By default I have set zfs-import-scan to be enabled but it will fail to run if /etc/zfs/zpool.cache is present.

However, I've updated zfs-utils-0.8.2-2.2 to run modprobe zfs on first installation as it makes sense to make it available automatically first time around (i.e. so you can set up a new pool).
