Mouse cursor moves but no click or focus

, ,

I have search, and I thought I had asked this before, but I cannot find it anywhere.

Intermittently my systems goes into a weird situation where my mouse keeps moving but clicks don't do anything and as I roll over windows and gadgets the focus does not change. Also, I cannot move windows.

If I notice this happen soon enough, I can do an F3 and get to a TTY, but I really do not know what to do with it. (If I don't do it fast enough it often will not do anything..(Like the keyboard has no impact, just like the mouse.)

In the times I have gotten to TTY I have looked at HTOP and do not see anything at 100% or weird. (For my eyeballs untrained, anyway.)

My system gets updated regularly with Stable. (Always seems to go well from Terminal.)

If I go to F3, and maybe kill a few things just trying to figure out what is happening, when I try to return to the GUI, via F1 of F7 or F9, the GUI comes up in my right-hand display, but the left-hand display ALWAYS stays as the Terminal.

In the terminal also, I have tried to startx and did a few attempts at KDE plasma stuff, but startx fails, and I didn't get anywhere with my attempts at KDE stuff.

Are there options for me to try from the terminal that might point me to the problem?
Where can I look at logs that might help too?

Thanx for the help:

It seems like the window manager has crashed for you... if you look closely any window should not have a top-bar anymore.
I had the same problem as you did before.... but it seems to have solved itself after an update.

When exactly does it happen? Is it reproduceable?

I do not think the window top-bars go away.

There is no obvious rhyme or reason to it. It is duplicatable, in that it continues to happen, maybe 2 times a week, but not reproducible on-demand in any way.

There may be some connection to when a Manjaro Update gives notification, maybe like it "wants to be updated so badly that it just irritates me to the point of getting to the update, versus finishing work... almost like a nagging little child!

But I cannot be positive about that. I do know that I usually go and look and often DO and update when this happens, hoping it will be fixed, so it is possible that they are linked, but that is just a fringe thought. No real ideas what is happening.

There should be some indication in logs somewhere, right?

Yet, when I go to get info I get nothing this way:

$ sudo journalctl -b -p err
[sudo] password for jim:
-- Logs begin at Mon 2020-03-16 10:28:48 EDT, end at Sun 2020-04-12 10:24:42 EDT. --

and

$ journalctl -b -p 3

lines 1-2/2 (END)

I do not know much else to do other than to look at htop.

I do have pictures (cell phone) of what I saw the last time it happened and I got into tty and went to htop. I will post if they might be helpful.

Thanx for help.

PS. I do realize those "errors" show now, but the commands were not showing ANYTHING when it happened, and this is since an update in the last 24 hours. Not sure that erre is bad, or connected. I doubt it is. But who knows!

Today it froze again. I paid attention so I can report that it happened when I was scrolling through a rather long webpage. I don't think that is normally what happens, but it was what was happening this time.
I was able to go to TTY with CTRL-ALT-F3, but immediately tried to go to F1 to retunr to the GUI. Again, the right screen showed the GUI, but left stayed on TTY3. Once I did that, I could do nothing. go anywhere, or even get another TTY to come up for another F key.

Hard reboot.

Opened terminal and gave:
$ sudo journalctl -b -p err
got

Just seems to repeat after that.

I did some google searches and it looks like maybe a READ error from my SSD drive?

Comment suggest I update Samsung Magician software, but that seems to be for MS Windows machines, Only.

GSmartControl shows my SSD 860 EVO 500GB, /dev/sda Passed.
A SelfTest revealed nothing additional.

Where can I go from here please?

Thanx for any help.

Can anyone help me go through a process to look at logs or something that would help me figure out what is causing these freezes?

Is there any further information that would help you steer me in the right direction?

After I reboot, isn't there commands that would help to understand what happened to cause the freeze? I have run the ones I have read about but I do not know where to go from here.

Thanx!

please help?

It does feel like I am talking to myself here, but I am going to continue to try to figure out what is happening.
Over in another thread, I asked for the New Recommended Settings for an HD (SSD) so that I could go and get a new HD, and start fresh with a new install of Manjaro KDE.

I figured that would give me the best chance at fixing or diagnosing further. Here is what I have experienced:

  1. Although I was told, and I tried to turn off CSM, (I am using UEFI,) upon boot my machine complained that the Video Card, an xfx r7800 series Ghost, did not have UEFI drivers, and so the CSM was re-enabled.
  2. Even during my time running on the Live USB os (Nothing yet installed) the system did the same thing: No clicks work. No moving Windows. But mouse moves. --So this tells me it is a very clear software OS setup, with nothing else installed, so maybe other hardware because the drive is now only a new flash USB Live boot...
  3. I looked around and found that particular Video Card does not have a good track record of playing nice with EUFI.

Now I have gone forward and I am on a fresh Manjaro KDE installation with bare minimums installed, so I can work. And the problem continues.

No reason why it happens, but it is happening more frequently now!

I just went to look for some errors and found this:

This is what i would like help doing...

Can someone help me to figure out if this is a hardware issue, and if it is, do I just need to get another video card? Or some other hardware? Or is this machine just not compatible with Manjaro, fully?

Thank you in advance for the help!

===============

What else can I do from terminal which would get you information to help me help myself please?

How does exfat fit into your partition scheme? (lsblk -f)

The cluster and dirty suggests filesystem or hard drive errors. Try a reboot into a manjaro install usb. And load up partition manager to run checkdisk (fsck) on each partition.

KDE plasma does plenty of qmlcache. Try removing the ~/.cache folder, relogin, and let it regenerate.

Thank you for the response.

$ lsblk -f

 Remove folder ~/.cache <=== Will try. But this is new install completely. Seems cache wouldn't overwhelm yet, right?

I think the other suggestion is to boot into the USB flashdrive of Live, and from there do a checkdisk (fsck) on each partition?

I will do this and report back. Thank you.
