No Ethernet Network Connection after Resume; very recent problem

There's a running joke here between @tbg & me about my Tower being evil, being possessed, etc. In light of the latest shenanigans documented below, it's becoming increasingly hard for me to defend my poor lil ole Tower against such character assassination

Every night i Suspend my Manjaro KDE Stable Tower, & every morning i Resume it [my long-term practice over many years]. Since migrating to Manjaro late last year i have never experienced any network connection reliability issues associated with the aforesaid operating paradigm. That all changed a few days ago, & is exasperating me. Since then, every morning after Resume, Tower's Network Manager cannot connect to the internet; this is via Ethernet, there is no WiFi in my Tower. The only way i can regain internet access is to reboot Tower, which then instantly provides a good connection, & this remains fine until the next time i Suspend, after which the problem recurs, necessitating another reboot.

From additional tests this morning the problem is INDEPENDENT of Ethernet Duplex mode, user account & kernel version.

Once the problem has recurred, trying to reconnect via systemctl is entirely unproductive:

AFTER Resume: [again no connection]

TIMELINE:

Summary
Saturday 21/7/18
14:31: Manual reboot following my correction of Ethernet Duplex mode; strangely & unknown to me, for months it had been on Half not Full.

Sunday 22/7/18
09:24: Manual reboot following Resume & my shock discovery of no network connection. This symptom had never occurred to me before.
19:54: Manual reboot following Stable Update 2018-07-22.

Monday 23/7/18
08:13: Manual reboot following Resume & discovery of no network connection again.

Tuesday 24/7/18
08:57: Manual reboot following Resume & discovery of no network connection again.
    09:22}
09:31} Manual reboots following various tests
10:01} [alternative kernels, second User account, Ethernet Duplex mode toggling]
    10:07}

IMO this problem is logically unrelated to any recent Manjaro updates, given the symptom first occurred [per my Timeline above] ~29 hours before the Stable Update 2018-07-22. However, for the record, here's the Pamac History for the past few days:

I searched the forum before making this post. There's lots of historical posts but most seem irrelevant to me as they involve no WiFi after Resume... my issue pertains to Ethernet. One post though interested me: Problems after Resume from Suspend

Solved everything by turning off IP6 in Network Manager. No issues at all since then

I have not yet tried that; conceptually i struggle with it given that before 22/7/18 there were no networking connection problems, so why would IPv6 [I only use IPv4 anyway] suddenly act up & cause this problem? It does not sound plausible to me.

I am baffled why this strange problem appeared out of the blue, unrelated to any apparent software package change. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Way TL;DR. Ha Ha. See now you're starting to believe me about the vile infestation of your compy.

Anyways, if I got the gist it should be easy to solve by removing your network modules before suspending and modprbing them on resume. I have scripted this before for these issues.

Try this before you go into suspend:

sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager

sudo ip link set enp2s0 down

sudo modprobe -r r8168

After you resume enter these commands:

sudo modprobe r8168

sudo ip link set enp2s0 up

sudo systemctl start NetworkManager

Hope that works, if it does I can show you how to script an automatic fix.

With respect, & yes i know you like teasing me, but this is really unfair. I take considerable trouble & time to write my posts with all the info other Manjaroos might need to assist me, without them needing to waste our collective time by posting back "did you try x, did you try y, show me your inxi" etc. If i was slack & didn't bother supplying info, i would be worthy of criticism. Yet if i do the right thing & do provide relevant info, i get criticised for being too verbose.

Also, at the first sign of trouble here with one of my PCs, i do not rush to create a post. I carefully research it, & exhaust all my troubleshooting ideas first. Only then, if i have not solved the problem [& by that stage i often have solved the problem] , do i post. If my troubleshooting had been comprehensive, then necessarily there will be quite a bit of relevant info to summarise. Omitting that info in the post IMO is counterproductive as then potential Manjaroo helpers run a very real risk of suggesting i do stuff i have already done.

Sheesh.

I know you have, my research uncovered a few of those posts. I deliberately did not try any of those because there is a logical test here that IMO needs answering... = WHY should i now suddenly need to create & run special scripts as of a few days ago, when since Nov last year they were not needed? Logically that salient point directly implies a deeper root cause... doesn't it?

I read the gist of your issue as I stated. I read enough to know the solution, so I posted it for you. It is very easy to test if that fix works. In all likelihood you probably only have to use the modprobe commands to fix your problem. The other commands are just extra insurance to make sure that it works.

Sorry if I offended you again, that was not my intention. Yes it would be better to have the issue corrected and identify whats causing this, but if you want a fix now this should do it for you. If you'd like help scripting a fix it is very simple and I'd be more than happy to help you.

My responses can be tactless at times, but my intent has always been to help you whenever you've asked for any assistance. All the best.

OK, ta. I shall look again at this issue tomorrow, given i fully expect tomorrow morning's Resume to leave me once more with no network.

Though i feel certain it will have not helped, just now i did disable IPv6 in Network Manager Settings GUI.

Also have you changed any settings in your BIOS. Perhaps try toggling the Wake On LAN option (WOL).

Do you simply never sleep?

Nope, i have not been into my BIOS for many many many months, maybe longer.

That's what's so astonishing about this out-of-the-blue problem; i had not made ANY changes... teehee, well, y'know, other than that Duplex-mode which a little birdie told me about, haha.

Maybe set to auto-negotiation in NM.

Try enabling Wake On LAN option (WOL) if it's not on already.

I plan on catching up when I'm dead, so no worries there.

@Kadee, did I miss the part in your posts where you stated the results of trying different kernels?

Well...

Okey doke. Doggone it--this problem happened to me awhile back, but with wifi (and probably ethernet, had it been connected). I do not recall the causation, but it eventually worked itself out IIRC...

I'd blame it on NetworkManager, then, the source of many on-again, off-again ills for many years...

But I don't have yer hardware, am in Arch, so my offerings are very limited. Sorry :cringe:

Sometimes you literally have to look outside the box. I'm sure you've already done the basic stuff like reset the router/broadband modem/whatever... Some routers have slow memory leaks that take months before they cause issues. It's also possible that your ISP upgraded their equipment or software and that is causing new problems. Maybe their DHCP leases are now very short. Every few years I find I have to replace my router, just because the outside world has changed too much! Do your other systems behave the same over ethernet or is the resident poltergeist just terrorizing one sleeping machine?

Ahem, an important necessary embarrassing reprise of some of my earlier words... blush. Previously as one part of my many tests over the past several days since this dumb new problem appeared out of nowhere, i definitely wanted to verify/discover if this fault occurred with not only my booted 4.17 kernel, so at that time i also tested my 4.16 kernel. The identical no-network post-Resume stupidity also manifested with this 4.16 kernel. Embarrassingly, in hindsight, i neglected to then also test my third installed kernel, 4.14. In this case it belatedly transpired that Meatloaf was wrong; Two Outa Three ARE Bad. Sigh, read on...

25/7/18: 11:11: UPDATE... I discovered that Kernel 4.14.56-1 DOES still happily Resume with normal network connectivity [why oh why lazily t'other day did i only test the two later kernels?]. Kernels 4.17.7-1 & 4.16.18-1 continue with their crazy recent problem of no network post-Resume... despite my Tower having successfully run with both the 4.17 & 4.16 series for several months, ever since they stopped being RC. What broke just recently?

11:45: Final reboot for today [???] after performing the latest Stable Update 2018-07-24 [which upgraded two of my three kernels], then repeated the Suspend-Resume tests. The new 4.17.9-1 still cannot reconnect to the network post-Resume. The new 4.14.57-1 still DOES reconnect to the network post-Resume.

So, now after 3.5 days of frustrating time-stealing shenanigans, Tower once more has network post-Resume [but ONLY if i run the 4.14 kernel]. Since my migration to Manjaro last year, this had never ever ever been a problem, regardless of what kernel i used... until something went down the toilet on 22/7. Weird.

Agreed, & i always strive for just this [me be a retired machinery diagnostics engineer who earned her daily bread doing logical troubleshooting diagnostics, so it's kinda habitual]. I won't bore you with details now, but none of the items you suggested here are applicable atm... various other tests & actions i did over the past several days [but was too lazy to document here] eliminated all of those. Thanks all the same.

Teehee, you got it in one! This is part of the reason i know that the weird recent fault is not my modem-router or upstream, but is restricted to my Terrorised Tower... both my Android phone & my Manjaro KDE Lappy have continued to have no problems connecting to my modem-router & hence internet anytime i want [including post-Resume in the case of Lappy]. Sigh.

Ha, machines were easy in comparison. They simply followed the laws of physics, thermodynamics, tribology & kinematics. Computers on the other hand seem to have a mind entirely their own, & obey nothing but voodoo black magic!

I would not be too concerned about this, personally. 4.14 is the current LTS kernel. It has happened to me from time-to-time on this mid-2014 Intel/Intel Dell laptop with various kernels. But since a few months from purchase, it has always seen the best overall results with the LTS kernel. Which is presently 4.14.

But if it drives you ■■■■■■■-crazy you can always bisect the non-functioning
kernel(s) and file a bugreport.

regards

EDIT: If you choose to bisect, be sure to do so on the machine which gives you the related problems. Oh, and I note there was an upstream (Arch Stable) networkmanager update this morning.

Haha, hello there. Frankly, it does! My weird mind cannot cope with just accepting that "sh1t happens"... i believe in cause & effect over random arbitrariness, yet so far in this bonkers case it seems to be the latter that occurred. As my Timeline & my Pamac History data in my OP documented, afaik there had been NO applicable software change from Sat 21/7 to Sun 22/7, explicitly including no package update of any kernels or networkmanager. THAT's what has driven me nuts in trying to troubleshoot this... a BIG Tower behavioural change resulted from... NO discernible package change immediately prior. That's completely illogical.

It's harder & harder for me to reject @tbg's working hypothesis about my Tower...

PS: Another flawless Resume this morning; instant network, with the 4.14 kernel. Of course, a week ago, i would still have had a perfect Resume with the 4.17 kernel. Sigh.

Per this post & a couple subsequent, Ethernet connection issues after standby (e1000e), Kernel 4.17.9 , this morning i experimented with this 4.18 RC5 kernel. It did not help at all, ie, just like 4.17 & 4.16 now do [but did not used to !!!], there is no network connectivity post Resume after Suspend. Only by again reverting to 4.14 does the correct post-Resume functionality return.

This is just bonkers.

Hi @Kadee .

Could you do me a favour and try this workaround/fix.

nmcli r all off; sleep 5; nmcli r all on

The beauty of this method is that these commands do not require root. You can easily create a bash alias and do not have to enter your sudo password. To make things even easier you could simply ctreate a desktop file calling the commands via a one line script add add the desktop file to your start menu or dock. A very simple iconized one click solution to refresh Network Manager. It doesn't get much simpler than that. No systemd unit files to mess with, or complicated scripting. Give that a try and see if those commands work for you (if it's not too much trouble please).

I'm not sure if it will work for you, but it's worth testing to find out.

Thanks in advance.

Whilst per my previous posts i remain perplexed why i now suddenly have to do anything different [given this silly problem began without me making any relevant kernel or software change], i will nevertheless most happily try out your idea... & i sincerely thank you for it.

It's not convenient atm for me to do this test, so i will wait til my tomorrow morning's Resume [tonight before bed i will change the kernel back up to 4.17, reboot, then Suspend it for the night]. Can i just clarify how to do the initial test? Yes i understand about me making a simple bash script that i can run, but that's not necessary yet until it proves to workaround the silly problem. So, for the initial test:

  1. Is it sufficient that i literally just copy/paste your compound command into Konsole & run it there?
  2. I presume that i run the command post-Resume [when i see there's no network again], not pre-Suspend [when i already do have my network availability]?

Thanks, will let you know, tomorrow.

PS:

I'm not necessarily afraid of systemd, but as per one of my earlier posts, none of my attempts to Enable & Restart [nor Stop & Start] NetworkManager via systemctl succeeded in giving me back my network, with 4.16/.17/.18, post-Resume, since this annoying problem appeared 7 days ago.

Yes, you are totally correct.

Thank you for agreeing to give it a try.
