NordVPN - how to completely remove from the system?

Hello,

I installed NordVPN from the AUR (using the Add/Remove software manager), but something went wrong and removed it using the same method. Then I saw this how-to: [HowTo] NordVPN - Usage, Installation, Updating and Troubleshooting and wanted to re-install it using the command line.

But the installation is not successful and I am getting the following message: "nordvpn-bin: /var/lib/nordvpn/data/insights.dat already exists in filesystem"

I can't seem to remove it in order to re-install NordVPN again. How do I completely remove all NordVPN files from the previous install?

Thanks!

what did you install initially?

And why cant you just delete the file ?

I installed "nordvpn-bin", then removed it, but the nordvpn directory was left in the /var/lib

Then I try the following (in the lib directory in su):

rm -rf nordvpn

rm: cannot remove 'nordvpn/data/insights.dat': Operation not permitted

lsattr -a
is it immutable ?

Errr sudo ????

sudo lsattr -a

--------------e----- ./nordvpn

how do I change the attributes for this directory and files inside before I can delete it?

No!

sudo rm -rf /path/to/folder

I am already in the /var/lib folder, then I do the following:

sudo rm -rf nordvpn
rm: cannot remove 'nordvpn/data/insights.dat': Operation not permitted

don't I need to change the attributes before I can delete?

ls -la nordvpn/data/

Returns?

ls -la nordvpn/data/

total 12
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Jun 5 11:23 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 5 08:30 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Jun 5 08:55 insights.dat

And lsattr?

sudo lsattr nordvpn/data
----i---------e----- nordvpn/data/insights.dat

sudo chattr -i nordvpn/data/insights.dat
sudo rm -rf nordvpn/

@cscs was right :smiley:

I have updated the HowTo with the information from this thread.

Hi, I followed your instructions to install nordVPN and it worked. But I get a message that I need to update the application. Then when I try to connect to a country, it fails:

nordvpn connect canada
A new version of NordVPN is available! Please update the application.
Please enter your login details.
Email / Username: *******************

Welcome to NordVPN! You can now connect to VPN by using 'nordvpn connect'.

Connecting to Canada #547 (ca547.nordvpn.com)
Whoops! We couldn't connect you to 'canada'. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact our customer support.

Are the two errors connected? How do I update the application? I thought it was freshly built.

Remember to start the service before connection plus you need to login first.

If it is an update you need to reload the service and if you have had version 3.0 installed there was two services you need to stop and disable those previous services.

There is an update to 3.1.0-5 but that has not yet reached AUR only flagged as out-of-date.

You can get latest version by updating the PKGBUILD.

Open a terminal

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/nordvpn-bin

Edit the PKGBUILD and change the version to 3.1.0_5 save the file and update checksums

updpkgsums

Then build and install

makepkg -sif

Managed to edit PKGBUILD, reinstall per instructions.

Uninstalled package, disabled and stopped services, removed stubborn files in nordvpn data folder, removed nordvpn folder.

Reinstalled nordvpn.

No error messages at all :joy:

Enabled service daemon. Then started service daemon.

But at login it does not matter whether I put in wrong or correct password I get the welcome message from nordvpn and then a message saying connection failed:

Please enter your login details.

Connecting to Australia #383 (au383.nordvpn.com)

And the app keeps on asking for my password every time I try to run a nordvpn command like listing available countries. The login details I enter can be completely wrong and it still goes ahead and ilsts the countries. :confounded:

Then you should talk to support - after all it is a paid service
