NVIDIA driver not working properly (+ poor rendering performance in Chrome)

Hey all,

I just installed Manjaro today on my laptop (been using Ubuntu for years, 18.04 most recently). I'm having trouble with getting my NVIDIA card working properly, and though I've searched the forum, I can't seem to find anything definitive.

Everything else in KDE seems pretty zippy and very smooth. It's just Chrome that feels sluggish rendering pages. For example, Speedtest.net is so sluggish that it actually affects the results of the speed test:

  • Chrome: 61Mbps down / 173Mbps up
  • Firefox: 289 down / 281 up

Firefox feels a tiny bit sluggish too, but not as bad as Chrome (which I need to use since I'm a web developer).

How can I give my browsers a GPU boost? I've got a GeForce 940MX in this thing, I should be able to use it! :sunglasses:

You know, on second thought: I have to say, I'm getting incredible battery life now that the Intel HD graphics chip is in charge! I'd still like to get better performance out of Chrome, though, if at all possible.

EDIT: I changed /usr/share/applications/google-chrome.desktop so that the exec command is prefixed with optirun. Performance was even worse (I could see pages painting as I scrolled). Surely there's a way to get Chrome performing normally? It worked much better on Ubuntu Budgie 18.04.

That's because the Ubuntu devs f@rt magic fairy dust, the Manjaro devs are mere unpaid mortals. :fairy:

You have quite a few options.

Each will deal with the Nvidia GPU differently, so you have to see how. From your post it seems you are using only the Intel GPU and you did not set the proper driver for the Nvidia GPU. Why i say that?

Chrome/Chromium performance should be just fine on Intel graphics anyhow. You shouldn't need to enable Nvidia graphics for that. It runs great on my T460 with Intel HD520 graphics.

I see you are using the Intel video driver instead of modesetting. That driver has caused me nothing but pain. You can de-install it through the Manjaro Settings Manager or mhwd. Manjaro will default to modesetting after a reboot. That may fix it...

Well it depends. For me it never worked as good as intel driver. Also mhwd uses intel driver when it installs hybrid-intel-nvidia-bumblebee.

Ps: just tried modesetting with optimus-manager and it's horrible. Selecting intel makes everything smooth again.
I know, I know. Nouveau. But it causes lockups on reboot, shutdown, etc, so it is disabled.

Thanks for trying! That's one thing I've never had to figure out. I only have systems with either Intel Video or a dedicated Nvidia card without Intel video. And no, Nouveau is somewhat usable, but not a good substitute for the proprietary drivers. Alas.

Ok, so here's where I am today:

Yes, Chrome isn't that terrible after all. My point of comparison is running Chrome on a Mac w/ dual AMD Fire pro GPUs, so.. :wink:

However, now that I've plugged in an external monitor into my laptop, with both running at HiDPI, things are a little more sluggish now. I don't think the Intel chip can handle two 4K displays.

I'm not sure what "modesetting" is (points to Newbie Corner sign). Any suggestions? I may actually try to disable the Intel chip from the BIOS, I think that's possible. Then see if the system is forced into using the NVIDIA card everywhere. I'm just not sure which drivers I should be using or how to get it set up properly.

I guess Bogdan already listed all options you can try. Now you have the first one. The second may be what you need.

@bogdancovaciu Well, the first link (Bumblebee route) seems to only work from a fresh install, which I'd rather not do. Plus I don't even fully understand the instructions.

The second one doesn't work for me. I run optimus-manager --switch nvidia, and then run glxinfo and I can see it's still using Intel for some reason.

I suppose I'll try the third option, using Prime, though I'll miss out on the great battery life.

From what i gathered it should remove all other configs and when you switch the GPU, there would be like a switch session ... like log out and back in kind of behavior. If it doesn't do that, maibe there is something along that you missed, or it didn't configure properly.

Well, the instructions for Prime hosed my setup. I had to revert it. I definitely followed the steps correctly, except maybe I got my bus ID wrong. In the example, the format is x:y:z, whereas mine is xx:yy.z. But I copied it as is, followed the rest of the steps, and was met with a black screen upon boot. :confused:

You can make it the same format, the values are simple

BusID          "PCI:0:2:0"

Welp, that probably explains why it failed. I did PCI:02:00.0. I may give that another try.
