Polybar crashes system when using the intel GPU

It sounds like a driver issue - do you have the intel graphics drivers installed?

I am using polybar - has done for as long as I have mave maintained the Openbox Community Ediution - nearly two years - if I remember correct. The idea originated from the ArchLabs spin.

I admit I do not have the Intel 630 - but the difference to 620 cannot be that big and I have one system running purely on Intel i7-8565/UDH 620 with out problems.

I also have another system ThinkPad T550 running Intel/Nvidia with Bumblebee - also no problems.

So I think it is caused by the relatively new hardware.

Check in Pamac - search for ìntel

Sorry for the relatively late reply, I really wish the notifications worked.
I get a bunch of items, should I just pamac install -intel?

Edit : I have the driver installed, although I went to manjaro-settings-manager (while running on nvidia because on intel it freezes the system just like polybar), and I have the video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-bumblebee driver installed, could that be related?

the intel driver package is xf86-video-intel

It is most probably related.
@dglt will know more on this... :wink:

yes and no, if bumblebeed.service is disabled then bumblebee is disabled. bumblebee uses bbswitch to handle power management and it :poop:. and optimus-manager uses either nouveau or bbswitch depending on how you set the switching method in it's configuration, neither are really a good option and probably why you cant switch between modes without lockups.

as for the polybar causing a lockup in intel mode, are you certain it's polybar causing this to happen? does anything else trigger a lockup? have you checked?

was xf86-video-intel installed or not until just now?

Yes it was previously installed.
As for the lock ups, other things that dont work are graphics related and only lock up in intel mode, here is a list:
-Manjaro-settings-manager - When I click on the hardware option the window freezes;
-Graphics related commands(sort of) - Commands such as mhwd and inxi don't work, when I call them in the terminal they don't print anything and I have to close that terminal, no killing the process with control+c doesn't work, it technically freezes;
-For some reason the program/command screenfetch won't work either;

Also for some bizarre reason I get screen tearing while on firefox, yet again, only in intel mode.
Yea that's about it as far as I know, thanks for the help, this is the first help forum that my issues don't get closed or ignored.
Edit: I found this Optimus Manager there is a topic exclusively for system lock ups.

this sounds more like a nouveau issue. post these outputs

mhwd -li
ls -laR /etc/X11 ; cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*.conf
ls -la /etc/modprobe.d ; cat /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf
ls -la /etc/modules-load.d ; cat /etc/modules-load.d/*.conf

I just did, but I replied to his reply

more like to be inspected by he who stumbles around in the dark until finding the light switch.:sweat_smile:

let me start with a disclaimer, i prefer to stay away from getting to technical with optimus-manager related threads, too many problems, too many potential points of failure. throwing nouveau+nvidia+bbswitch into a blender is not a functional system make. :wink: im just trying to keep expectations in check. also to note that i have never once been able to make optimus-manager function in a stable manor, if at all.

that said, some things dont look right.

both of these are installed by mhwd, optimus-manager is suppose to use it's own files that get created during boot for the configuration you set. get rid of those 2 files.

sudo rm -rf /etc/modprobe.d/mhwd-bbswitch.conf
sudo rm -rf /etc/modprobe.d/mhwd-nvidia.conf

your logs are entirely absent all the "prime-switch" lines that are usually there with optimus-manager so i dont think you even have optimus-manager.service enabled.

post this output:

systemctl status optimus-manager.service

Yes, just did that, should I try and see if it locks up?

@AgentS , any idea on the crontab error?

@HewpMePwease, did your last update fail to finish?

Nop, updated perfectly with no errors.

ok, set intel as startup mode and reboot

optimus-manager --set-startup intel
systemctl reboot

if/when you get to a desktop, post these outputs

inxi -Fxxxza
glxinfo | grep -i vendor
systemctl status optimus-manager.service
