Hello, I've been having some random crashes however im not quite sure what causes them. Even after a new installation all windows will freeze following the mouse freezing after 2-3 seconds. Then the computer is completly unresponsive and it has to be forced shutdown.

" journalctl -b-1 -k" only reveals the following warning at the end:

No other error messages before or after it. It happens randomly and i can't reproduce it (even when the GPU is not used at all).

I have the latest drivers and I am fully updated. I'm using the AMD RX 580 GPU with latest kernel 5.8 (happens with 5.7 too), latest mesa driver, kwin-lowlatency, etc. This is all the information I can give.

UPDATE: It seems that its caused by my secound monitor. Unplugging it fixes the problem

Have you tried regular kwin?

Hey, I am experiencing the same issue on regular arch and an AMD RX 570 connected to two monitors. Log output is basically identical to the one provided:

@mbb I think the amdgpu driver is most likely the issue.

I've only started experiencing issues a few weeks ago so I will try to roll back the driver and report back if it helps.

The latest version amdgpu-19.1.0-2 was built on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 (which coincides well with when I started experiencing issues) and I will downgrade to amdgpu-19.1.0-1 which was built on Friday, October 11, 2019 to test if the driver is at fault.

[mbb@mocho-desktop ~]$ pacman -Q | grep amdgpu
mhwd-amdgpu 19.1.0-1
xf86-video-amdgpu 19.1.0-2

I have a RX470 with no issues. But, as I run it in PCI-E v2, and it doesn't support atomic commits, I can't conclude the problem isn't in the driver.

Ok, interesting.

I forgot to mention that I rolled back xf86-video-amdgpu specifically.

And so? The problem remains or got solved?

Sadly not, crahes remain with same error.

This can't be right. I only have PCI-E v2 slots. Maybe it's a miscommunication between the driver and the kernel on what PCI-E version the card is running on.

I'm running the card on a PCI-E v3 slot. It would be more likely if the issue is something that effects both our systems, although two separate issues with the same symptoms is not entirely unlikely.

Interestingly enough I haven't had a crash in a few days since the rollback and the last crash came during some high I/O ops (disk shredding). Could it be that the amdgpu messages we're seeing are caused by the crash itself but not the cause of the crash?

EDIT: On the flip side, I'd like to note that when the system freezes everything graphical becomes unresponsive, but music keeps playing, which does indicate a graphical problem.

Well, if you run it in PCI-E v2 and you are using a software which requires atomic commits, that could be the issue. I can't use ROCm, for example, because of that. On the other hand, Sinitax0 runs a PCI-E v3 and has the same messages, so that's not likely the cause :man_shrugging:

I haven't used my desktop lately, but I never had such issues.

Again, have you tried regular kwin?

It can be that your system is only performing background tasks (in ex.: swapping) and you just need to wait.

Freezes are back, often (always?) while discord is running.

Seems the rollback did not help after all.

Check your RAM and swap usage with free just to make sure this isn't caused by lack of RAM.

Yes i did but it didn't help. My next theory is that it may be Firefox. I will try to let it run without Firefox for a while and see what happens.

Edit: It seems that the crashes are caused by various programs. Not leaving Firefox running for a long time (or just using it in very short bursts) seems to solve the issue but it seems that the crash can also be caused by games too.

I checked and I am still far from using all of my RAM (8gb) and any of my swap space. Also switched to a lightweight browser to see if the impact on RAM usage would make a difference, but my system still freezes up about every 3 days.. very annoying.

Yes, annoying indeed. Besides lack of RAM and disk latency, I have no idea what might be causing it!

EDIT: I'd try an older kernel, make sure BIOS is up to date. Check you hardware for bad connections and dirt, try to disable mitigations just to see if it is somehow caused by that.

It's kinda late but I did find a similar issue reported elsewhere and it seems that it's caused by linux 5.7 kernel. I have switched to the lts kernel for now to see if I get this crash again.

tldr of the issue @LlamaMonster posted:

If you run Linux 5.7 or higher and have two monitors connected to an AMD GPU, this general protection fault will happen.

Workarounds: Using a kernel version below 5.7 or using just one monitor.

I have managed to build linux57 from Manjaro's package sources, with additional patches to reverse the offending commits that cause the crashes.

For those that want to build this kernel themselves: Source
For those that want to download a finished package (stable branch only): Releases

New release with the same patch that will be available by default with linux58.
