rofi shows me little boxes with letters instead of actual letters.
even when i set the font rofi should use explicitely:
rofi -sidebar-mode -modi run,drun,window -lines 12 -padding 18 -width 60 -location 0 -show drun -
columns 3 -font "Noto Sans 15" -show-icons
OS: Manjaro Linux x86_64

It's a known problem with the Pango library upstream, and it has been mentioned in the #announcements for just about every update to Stable, Testing and Unstable issued in the last two months.
The workaround is to install noto-fonts-cjk or a similar font.
i already had noto-fonts-cjk installed… is there anything else?
Not insofar I know. 
You need to change the font in rofi configuration to non bitmap font.
i deleted my .config/rofi and .config/rofimenu folders and that fixed it 🤷🤷 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
