Screen freezes after logging in from screen lock

This has been going on for a few months. I can hit ctl+Alt F1/2/3 and get a terminal and things respond normally, in the terminal, whilst the lightdm session remains frozen. The time varies.

After leaving the machine overnight it freezes for a few minutes. During the day it freezes for a few seconds to 10's of seconds depending on how long it is left.

I have upgraded kernal a few times during the period and and there was no effect.

I have taken journalctl dumps at the time, but nothing is being logged to journalctl while it is frozen.
inxi dump of my system - it is just this system my other 4 systems do not have this problem.

More info - There is nothing logged in journalctl whilst the screen is frozen.

This morning it was frozen for 7 minutes, and I dumped the journalctl to disk after I logged into a virtual terminal and then again when the lightdm session started working again. Nothing was logged to journalctl for the entire 7 minutes.

One factor in the length of the delay is the amount of swap usage. I think it is less when there is less swap usage.
I reduced swap with vm.swappiness=10, but did not make this permanent, and after a reboot the freezes got longer and I had about 8 gig swapped. However after the morning freeze the system would be fine for the rest of the day.
So I did not bother clearing the swap.
I cleared the swap, yesterday so this morning there was only 10 meg in swap, and there was still a long delay.
Going upgrade to the 5.4 kernel since this has zswap by default, and have already made the swappines changes permanent going forward.

I am using direct rendering

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

direct rendering: Yes

One thing I noticed in the output of glxinfo

Now on 5.4 kernel see if the issue is still around tomorrow morning.

5.4 Kernel was a big improvement on memory management for my machine. Now been running for a few days with out going near the 16 gig physical memory limit. I was using swap with the previous kernel.

Had first overnight freeze this morning and it was different in that it only lasted 10 secs and was logged into journalctl.

The following is the journalctl log

Looks like moving to 5.4 kernel has solved the problem. The main difference is that system is using a lot less memory so there is still a large amount of free memory.

I run 2 screens and 4 workspaces, and usually have a dev environment in one workspace, an office environment in a couple of others and a primary environment with email, slack and other chats. and office apps running.

Spoke too soon.
It has continued freezing after being left over night. I tried killing off firefox at the end of the day which freed up about 8gig of memory, so there was plenty of free memory overnight and no swap usage, and it still frooze for about 5 minutes in the morning.

This morning the freeze looks to be perminent since it has been frozen for over 25 minutes. Just went back to it to check since I am posting on another machine and it has unfrozen after 30 minutes.

I am going to upgrade the kernel again to the same version as my other machines. So it will go from 5.4 to 5.6 going forward.

Has carried on with 5.6 kernel. Froze for 7 minutes this morning.

The only thing that is logged in journalctl during the freeze is my logging into multiple tty's as I use all the virtual terminals to look at the logs and sudo iotop etc.

Apart from the frozen desktop session everything else works fine.

Will try and tidy up all my work and then reboot into kernel 5.7 to see if it makes a difference. It does work fine for a couple of days after a reboot and then gets progressively worse.
