[Solved] Monitor doesn't work anymore, faulty cable? Need your experience

Dear super friendly Manjaro community,

in the last week I have experienced a faulty connection with the monitor I usually used to work. It is a Acer B6 27" WQHD, I'm on a Dell XPS 13 9360 (late 2016) and I'm connecting to it through a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. My inxi is here.
From one day to another, when I connected the monitor it doesn't show anything and after a while it displayed me "No Signal". I tried to look at the dmesg log and this was what I found
when I connect the cable

The error seems related to ACPI or to the BIOS. Searching the internet and our forum I didn't find anything very useful to solve the problem.

I updated the BIOS (since I was two versions behind the latest) and the Thunderbolt port firmware too (I was on NVM 21 and I updated to the testing one, NVM 26) but it doesn't solve the problem.
The port and the monitor seem working fine because I connected them with the Dell DA200 adapter, which is a USB-C to HDMI adapter (among with other ports). I don't like this option since the maximum resolution I get is only FullHD. After the lastest update of XOrg, nothing changes.

From the HW side, I started thinking the cable is faulty in some way, but I don't have another cable to give it a try. From the SW side I cannot understand how a BIOS or an ACPI error could pop up from one day to another without giving any advice.

In the meanwhile I search for another cable, could you give me your impression on this?

Thank you very much,
Davide

ACPI errors a generally of little real concern. Mostly just an annoyance.

It's nothing wrong with your BIOS, this is caused by a recent update - I had the exact same thing happen to me. Installed updates, reboot, and lo and behold my second monitor attached to my dock via DVI no longer works, and when it does work the image is all scrambled. I quick test with another distro confirmed nothing wrong with the hardware.
Same issue with Arch-based Netrunner.
Guess I'll be taking a break from Manjaro.

Thank you Jerome for sharing your experience. I don't think it is "update"-related since my issue came at the end of last weekend and I've installed the last stable update yesterday. As written before, I don't have the problem on Wednesday evening and have it on Thursday morning when I came back at work.
In any case I have a timeshift backup of Manjaro OS from the last week, I can give it a try an report back.
For your case, IMHO, I will try to downgrade XOrg since it was included in the last update

  1. Isolate fault first. Try a different adapter/cable.
  2. List xorg logs

What DE are you using to configure? What display driver? What kernel are you using?

Hello,

Just a few troubleshooting steps if you can try and let us know what the outcome is.

  1. Does the monitor get power? Green or yellow light?
  2. Have you tested the cables on another monitor?
  3. What is the video settings in your bios, do you have onboard video enabled or PCI?
  4. Have you tested another monitor in the place of the one not working?

Sometimes a loose connection, could cause you to think the monitor in not working. Testing with a known good monitor can rule out hardware, very quickly. Just a suggestion.

  1. I'm trying to find another cable, but I need more time to find one. When I have it I will post the result here.
  2. Before cable insertion

After having inserted the cable, nothing changes in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file

I'm on KDE with XOrg. I tested my cable/monitor with the three kernels I have installed, namely 4.14.65-1, 4.15.18-3, 4.17.17-1 but I cannot see anything on the monitor, and the error in dmesg is the same. For the display driver I guess you refer to graphic driver which is mesa 18.1.6.

Hi, I don't think the problem is in the monitor:

  1. it gets power, it has a blue light when it starts and then yellow, because it receives no signal
  2. the monitor works if connected through HDMI and not DisplayPort

I would like to test the cable on another monitor or another cable with this monitor, but I need more time to do that. I need to find someone how could give me cable/monitor for test.

I'm not sure how to answer you point 3. I've only embedded graphic card on this computer, therefore I don't know I can choose something in my BIOS.

Just as a data point, I just set up a second monitor via DP pass-through/daisy-chain. The first time I tried, the second monitor flashed on and off (e.g. losing signal), and when it did have a signal it had a load of screen noise/artefacts. So, I switched to a different cable - and it now works perfectly.

Update: I've managed to find other two monitors with a DisplayPort and hence I tested my cable + computer. With the first one I did not obtain any image, but it was detected by my computer since the screen is visible under the settings. With the second one (that is the exact same model I have in my office) it worked perfectly out of the box. The dmesg errors are still there in both cases.
After coming back to my office, I re-tested my own monitor and no images were displayed. But, with the monitors setting panel already opened, I saw that the monitor was detected but it wasn't enable... Enabling it solves my problem. So, sorry for bothering you with this stupid problem  (I don't remember if when I opened this thread I've checked the setting panel too. If not, I'm definitively stupid)
In any case, I cannot understand how is it possible that from one day to another this settings change without my intervention.
Thank for your support!
