Startech PCIe 4 port USB 3.0 extender PEXUSB3S44V on MSI TRX40 not working

Hey everyone.

I have a weird issue, which I don't fully understand.
I have a couple of 4 port Startech PCIe USB 3.0 extender cards with 4 dedicated channels (PEXUSB3S44V).

They somehow don't get recognized in Linux in combination with an MSI TRX40 + Threadripper 3960X. The same Linux works together with the cards on another machine, and the cards work on any machine (that I tried) with Windows.

computer A:

  • MB: MSI TRX40
  • CPU: AMD Threadripper 3960X

computer B:

  • MB: MSI 7752 (super old, around 7 years, but I successfully tried other machines as well)
  • CPU: i5

computer A + windows = yes
computer A + linux = no
computer B + linux = yes
computer B + windows = yes

In Linux I tried Kernel 4.4 4.14 4.15 4.18 5.3 and 5.4
I also tried Manjaro and Ubuntu, and Windows 10.

I move the harddrives from one computer to the other. procedure:

  1. Linux hard drive and cards in computer A -> not working!
  2. power off computer A
  3. remove Linux hard drive and cards from computer A
  4. insert Linux hard drive and cards in computer B
  5. power on computer B
  6. Linux hard drive and cards in computer B -> working!
  7. power off computer B
  8. remove Linux hard drive and cards from computer B
  9. insert Linux hard drive and cards in computer A
  10. power on computer A
  11. Linux hard drive and cards in computer A -> not working!
  12. power off computer A
  13. remove only Linux hard drive from computer A
  14. insert Windows hard drive in computer A
  15. power on computer A
  16. Windows hard drive and cards in computer A -> working!

I know that my wifi card (AX200) does not work as well, but... that is less crucial in my current setup, because I can use a cable. The cards are breaking my neck though.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I also tried btw all of the 4 PCIe slots, and yes, I powered them. I assume it is a linux driver issue, since in windows everything works just fine. Or could it be a BIOS setting?

Here is the manual, on page 63 are advanced settings.
I tried setting the card at PCIe SlotX Lanes Configuration to "Auto", and "4x4x4x4" and "4x4".

I hope this is possible to figure out...

reboot , press Esc for Grub
