Steam is unresponsive to interactions.

I'm running the latest version of Manjaro with Gnome desktop environment. When I launch steam I cannot click on the window to drag it, or sign in.

We'll need more details.

Basically run inxi -Fxz so we know your system and specs as well as run Steam from a terminal and copy/paste that output into a preformatted text block ( the </> button between quotes and pictures) because that might contain the error or at least give us an idea on where to start.

EDITED to fix incorrect command

inix -Fxz' returns inix -Fxz
bash: inix: command not found`
Here is the output from running steam

Other than not being in the preformatted text block, nothing there looks incorrect and, in fact, almost mirrors my output. Not putting that in the preformatted text block will grind some gears. Not mine because I don't really care one way or the other, but some people are really adamant about those kinds of things.

OMG. I'm dyslexic. That should have been "inxi -Fxz". Whoops.

I'm sorry. I just noticed that it wasn't in the text block. It looks like one of the characters got offset and it messed everything up. Here's my system info:

Hmm. Normally I'd suggest trying the 4.19 LTS kernel, but you really need to be on 5.2/5.3 or better due to your very new hardware.

Perhaps give linux55 a shot since it may have better support for your CPU/GPU.

Another option might be to try and see if UXA works better than SNA on your system (the graphics rendering method by creating 20-intel.conf under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d that contains:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "AccellMethod" "UXA"
EndSection

I'm not sure if that'll work or not.

I can't seem to get the grub menu to load so that I can switch to the linux55 kernel.

Can post /etc/default/grub?

Edit that and change GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE to menu.

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

and run sudo update-grub

I have to do that on my system to access the menu else I have to guess at a half second window to access Grub.

Were you ever able to boot into the newer kernel and did it help?

And I forgot to ask if you were using a Wayland or an Xorg session.

Sorry. My computer hibernated and unknowingly got set to RAID. I've not tried the new kernel yet. Also I'm kinda new to Linux. How do I view whether I'm using a Wayland or Xorg session?

Okay, so I tried switching to the new kernel and the only thing it changed was making my sound card unrecognized. And I'm in an x11 session.

I also reinstalled Manjaro and I'm still having the same issue.

After writing everything below I thought about an odd one that's bugged me in the past, this isn't a situation where Steam has more than one window open but the active window is hidden from view? I've had to alt+tab and close the News Window, odd combo boxes, etc over the years because, even though they were in the background and I didn't even realize they were open, they were taking click and input precedence until I alt+tabbed over and closed them. The way these modern UI's like to group stuff up makes situations like that very unobvious that they're happening. Steam doing that is why I disable taskbar grouping on my Plasma desktop.

A reinstall shouldn't have been necessary; although my first home desktop was Windows 98 so I get it.

I realized that Wayland or Xorg question was answered in the output of inxi right when I posted it. Wayland is know to have its share of issues and trying an Xorg session would have been a suggestion. You can set your session from the login screen, but you'll likely want to use Xorg.

You could try running Steam with one of the two different Steam runtimes instead of the native system libraries that Manjaro uses by default (using the native libraries is usually better for us).

A quick way to test to see if they'll work is to launch Steam from a terminal with STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam to test the older runtime and `STEAM_RUNTIME_HEAVY=1 STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam' to try their newer one (it might require the Steam beta client).

Give it a bit before you think it freezes the first time you run one of those...my terminal sat there for like a minute and a half doing nothing and the only real indication that something was going on was my hard drive indicator light blinking.

If you find that one of those runtimes fixes your problems then you can set those environment variables so Steam runs like that by default. My preference is to use /etc/environment for global variables and $HOME/.pam_environment for per-user variables.

In either of those files you just have to add

STEAM_RUNTIME_HEAVY=1
STEAM_RUNTIME=1

to make Steam use its newer runtime (and reboot if /etc/environment is used and log out and back in if ~/.pam_environment is used). Omit the *_HEAVY line if the older one works better.

Neither STEAM_RUNTIME=1 or STEAM_RUNTIME_HEAVY=1 works. I chose nonfree drivers, could that be an issue?

I'm still getting steam runtime is disabled even when I run it with STEAM_RUNTIME=1

Don't you only have an Intel integrated GPU? There should only be free drivers available. That's according to the inxi output. You should be using xf86-video-intel as your driver.

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

and reboot

Only Nvidia users need to use the non-free driver.

Ah, I'm stupid. You're right. I just ran inxi and it said my driver is i915.

It's all good.

Odd that the Steam Runtime doesn't work.

Well, not that vblank_mode line...I force vsync on on my system since my monitor is a TV and it helps with tearing.

I got steam runtime to work but there's no change. Steam_runtime_heavy still doesn't work.
