gnome- alt + drag stuff to desktop then click on (context menu) create link
or just drag and drop to move stuff to desktop,

Just a headsup.
Desktop Icons in general are going away in Gnome 3.28. 
HaHa. What's next the Gnome SunDial for telling the time.

Never seen the point of minimising everything on the desktop just to use a shortcut better to use a dock for favourite apps
