Unlocking fail from monitors off

I use a yubikey with a static password in one of the slots for logging in & sudo. For a long time, I could activate it when sitting down at my computer with the monitors turned off and my session would unlock. Within the past few months that stopped working, I just get an "Unlocking Failed" message above the password field when the monitors turn on.

I have no issues if I first wake up my monitors then activate my yubi. I've tried grepping journalctl but haven't found anything. Is there anywhere else I can look to find a root cause? Or maybe someone else has figured out my admittedly small use case problem.
