VM - Qemu, Libguestfs, hivex, ruby - hivex can't find ruby

Okay, I'm newbie, following guides and steps of people who walked the road before me, reading a lot - rarely commenting and even more rarely making post (my second post ever in Linux group) !
The situation:
I'm following that guide for VM - https://computingforgeeks.com/complete-installation-of-kvmqemu-and-virt-manager-on-arch-linux-and-manjaro/
The error appear right after installing yaourt ! When I tell yaourt that i need libguestfs - it split that error:

[nigzi@nigzi500 ~]$ yaourt -S --noconfirm --needed libguestfs

You may need to add #include directives for the following .h files.
  #include <byteswap.h>
  #include <fcntl.h>
  #include <inttypes.h>
  #include <stdio.h>
  #include <string.h>
  #include "c-ctype.h"
  #include "full-read.h"
  #include "full-write.h"
  #include "glthread/lock.h"
  #include "ignore-value.h"
  #include "progname.h"
  #include "xstrtol.h"
  #if HAVE_ICONV
  # include <iconv.h>
  #endif

You may need to use the following Makefile variables when linking.
Use them in <program>_LDADD when linking a program, or
in <library>_a_LDFLAGS or <library>_la_LDFLAGS when linking a library.
  $(LTLIBICONV) when linking with libtool, $(LIBICONV) otherwise
  $(LTLIBINTL) when linking with libtool, $(LIBINTL) otherwise
  $(LTLIBTHREAD) when linking with libtool, $(LIBTHREAD) otherwise

Don't forget to
  - add "gnulib/lib/Makefile" to AC_CONFIG_FILES in ./configure.ac,
  - add "gnulib/tests/Makefile" to AC_CONFIG_FILES in ./configure.ac,
  - mention "lib" in SUBDIRS in gnulib/Makefile.am,
  - mention "tests" in SUBDIRS in gnulib/Makefile.am,
  - mention "-I m4" in ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am,
  - mention "m4/gnulib-cache.m4" in EXTRA_DIST in Makefile.am,
  - invoke gl_EARLY in ./configure.ac, right after AC_PROG_CC_STDC,
  - invoke gl_INIT in ./configure.ac.

Thank you for downloading hivex 1.3.18

This is how we have configured the optional components for you today:

OCaml bindings ...................... yes
Perl bindings ....................... yes
Python bindings ..................... yes
Ruby bindings ....................... yes

If any optional component is configured 'no' when you expected 'yes'
then you should check the preceeding messages.

Please report bugs back to the mailing list:
http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/libguestfs

Next you should type 'make' to build the package,
then 'make check' to run the tests.

When i download it from the official cite everything is the same - general fail with ruby... I downloaded files needed files for the extra tests - still the same... I have latest ruby installed thru pamac-manager !
I'm just stuck with that hivex - reede thems in redhat forum in obuntu and even here - here was 1 theme, I think it was about error loop with ocaml - not sure how it ended and it was closed one without solution for hivex...
Even if i follow other VM road, I think it's important to solve that thing!
EDIT:
Currently im trying to find how to
Revert "out of tree build: ruby"
https://github.com/coriolis/hivex/blob/master/ChangeLog - said here in the changelog
Also once trying to install hivex with pamac-manager - pamac-manager told me some error

something with that -> git://git.sv.gnu.org/gnulib.git

which led to me to GNU and GNU-LIB

Yaourt is no longer maintained and as such unsupported. Try a different aur helper like yay.

the problem is not in yaourt - it's in hivex - even trying to install it thru diffrent locations - gives hell of a pain and not willing to successfully install...
When i decided to try instalin libguestfs ( which need hivex, hivex need ruby - i have ruby, but hivex doesn't care ) in pamac-manager - the whole pamac-manager freez ( stop running) and i have to kill it thru kSys ( windows user here :smiley: )

Not allowed here.
:smiley:

On the other hand, why don't you ask there?

That's just your opinion.

Okay - eX win user :smiley:
As a normal person with less knowledge and strange logic, can I ask you - why the fault to be in yaourt ? Like, I'm trying to execute this two days ( maybe more ) pamac-manager goes brown pants with the hive and libguestfs... I'll try again with different lib ( maybe yay), but still - I downloaded hivex execute the programs(commands) in a way that doesn't have anything to do with yaourt and still the same error - if you want I can show the code and the order that I follow... Don't get me wrong I know it's old and unsupported, but still it didn't interfere with the second method ( or at least i see it like this ) - I just wanna hear your opinion because I'm new and i wanna learn :slight_smile:
Thanks in advance !

do you have matching kernel headers and base-devel installed?

sudo pacman -S linux52-headers base-devel

would you know why it's trying to grab ruby libs from a snap package?

do you have ruby installed as a snap? (i dont use snaps so i really have no idea)

After removing yaourt with
Sudo -Rsc yaourt
Install YAY with pamac and then trying to install hivex (and anything other) with YAY i get:

yay -S hivexyay: error while loading shared libraries: libalpm.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have - I also instaleted it afterwards trying to "make it run" :sweat_smile:
Even without it it still had that error i think... i will uninstall it right away and try again ( it's the first time I have installed it thru snap package )

is there a reason why you cant just use the hivex pakage in manjaro's repo?

1 Like

You mean from pamac-manager ? If so - the first installation try is exactly from there !

no, to rule out possibility of the problem being pamac itself. i think you should

  • get rid of the snap ruby package and install the correct on from manjaro's repo
    sudo pacman -S ruby
  • install hivex
    sudo pacman -S hivex

if it fails, post the entire output

your title "hivex cant find ruby", was it such a great idea integrating snap/flatpak into pamac? (rhetorical question)

sudo pacman-mirrors --country all --api --protocols all --set-branch stable && sudo pacman -Syyu

stop trying to get hivex-git to build, cure the disease, not the symptom. hivex is in the manjaro community repo, yet you cant see it. manjaro's package-query is 1.9.2, but you have 1.9-3 from an outside repo

Actually, it's not (anymore). Maybe it got removed at some point?

edit: It's available in testing and unstable but not (yet?) in stable: http://manjaro32.org/repo-compare/community.html

So maybe wait for next stable release to install hivex from repositories.

im in testing branch so that makes sense. i assumed with the other issues the user was having that the problem was related to either mirrors failing to sync properly which in a the past couple days considering the pacman version was updated and then rolled back due to issues. pacman-mirrors also got updates pushed a few times in just the past couple days.

@niks either wait until the recent wave of updates reaches stable, OR manually grab the package from testing, OR switch to testing branch.

i still think you should check your pacman.conf and make sure archlinuxfr is the last repo listed (furthest down, manjaro repos should come before (above) it . then also run an update with -Syyuu so your package-query package is the one in manjaro's repo and not from archlinuxfr

# By default, pacman accepts packages signed by keys that its local keyring
# trusts (see pacman-key and its man page), as well as unsigned packages.

# REPOSITORIES
# - can be defined here or included from another file
# - pacman will search repositories in the order defined here
# - local/custom mirrors can be added here or in separate files
# - repositories listed first will take precedence when packages
# have identical names, regardless of version number
# - URLs will have $repo replaced by the name of the current repo
# - URLs will have $arch replaced by the name of the architecture
#
# Repository entries are of the format:
#       [repo-name]
#       Server = ServerName
#       Include = IncludePath
#
# The header [repo-name] is crucial - it must be present and
# uncommented to enable the repo.
#

# The testing repositories are disabled by default. To enable, uncomment the
# repo name header and Include lines. You can add preferred servers immediately
# after the header, and they will be used before the default mirrors.

@freggel.doe - Thanks for clearing the mist !
@dglt

How to do that ?
I'm currently in intel config with that being "said" in the fail you mantion

#!/bin/sh

#this script is run as a display setup script
#that replaces the one used by nvidia/prime.
##
#this powers-down/disables the nvidia dGPU and
#removes it from /sys/bus/pce/devices
#for the current boot. this is reset after reboot.
# PLEASE READ BELOW TO ENABLE THIS

xrandr --auto
echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control' #adjust busid if needed

#############
##make sure the line below is the correct acpi_call to disable your nvidia gpu.
#to find out what call disables your nvidia gpu,
#run this (not while using nvidia gpu, this is why i left it commented out.
#
#` sudo /etc/switch/gpu_switch_check.sh `
#
#and see which acpi_call is returned as "works!" and then uncomment and edit this file to match.
#same goes for the the BusID of nvidia card,
#default is set to 0000:01:00.0 (syntax is important)
#if your nvidia gpu has a 1:0:0 busID, just uncomment the line, no change needed.

#echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._OFF' > /proc/acpi/call
#echo -n 1 > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/remove'

i manage to run the VM and i saw I'm short on Vram - I'm using second monitor and I'm wondering - can I pass the video output to that second monitor :sweat_smile:
